A nice, often funny film about a young girl who lives in her imagination, grows up to help other's ( less fortunate) in her own endearing way. I wish it was dubbed in english though.
It certainly is a unique film in a number of ways. There is a cluster of oddball characters that go about their daily lives. Amelie finds some unusual methods for dealing with them. It is more soft chuckle funny rather than hilarious.
Audrey Tatou is a wonderful actress and my feelings towards her certainly are not diminished by this performance.
There is just something about French comedies that make them unwatchable for me, maybe it's the lack of Wit, or lack of Tongue in Cheek dialogue, whatever it is makes them really boring! Then again Jerry Lewis was always a favourite in France, so maybe they are just a Slapstick kind of Nation!
Loved it! So cute and different. Very enjoyable
A whimsical highly original movie that focuses on a withdrawn character who prefers to interact anonymously with other people. Audrey Tautou is superb in a quirky heartwarming tale that will leave you feeling good about life. There are amusing situations and eccentric characters galore.
A very charming film full of originality and feel-good material. The quirky nature may feel unusual to inexperienced filmgoers, but I can say that from experience that "Amelie" gets better with repeated viewings. A delightful, funny and happy movie that's good when you've just had a bad day. A must see.
beautiful scene, beautiful character, best music. This is the 3rd time I rented since 2002.
Shocking movie. Watched for half hour and then gave up. Very disjointed.
I have seen this film about 3 times now and it is just as delightful now as then. Amelie is a wonderful character who has chosen to anonymously do good in the word and to mildly punish the wrong doers. She has her own unique way of helping and tormenting her targets. In the process, she discovers a young man who attracts her. She must now decide to reveal herself to him or to continue to hide behind her tricks. Watch for the garden gnome, who together with Snow White, helps Amelie's father to start living again.
I just love this movie, so quirky, great characters. Love the sound track by Yann Tiersen too.
A delightful playful romantic film.
In french so there's subtitles
That would have to be one of the "nicest" movies I've ever seen. Smiled all the way through.
Pathos,humour,love,bittersweet,poignant,philosophical,bizzare et al!
One of the most cleverly directed films of the French genre and brilliantly acted and a great storyline with twists and unexcpected scenarios make this film well woth the price of admission. I wonder about people that watch foreign films and can not get around the sub titles...without the original inflections and voices one can lose a bit in translation when these type of movies are dubbed. Viva la difference!
One of my all time favourites of all foreign films...
A bit hard to what, the French have a very different syle of Romance Drama
A ground breaking simple movie soaking into complications of emotive human life. A must-see movie in French with English subtitle which can be watched over and over especially when you are in your solitude stage.
I tried watching this movie twice, if your not good at subtitles, dont watch it!
I found it rather boring, but im not good at reading all through the movie!
This is a great film. Audrey Tautou has some great facial expressions, and the mystery component is well done. (Who is the man in all the photos?) A fun film about a lovely girl.
My partner and I both found this a thoroughly delightful film. We watched it a second time only a fortnight later and still enjoyed it as much as the first. The subtitles are no trouble as the dialogue is not so fast that you miss the action. It is quirky and refreshingly different. A lovely story about a shy young woman who imaginitively helps people around her. Leaves you feeling happy.I have found a new favourite movie.
A romantic comedy such as France is famous for. In some ways, the film has the ingredients for a very good film but there are some major factors which tend to spoil it somewhat. The primary character is Amelie, a girl whose mother died when she was very young. Since then she has been living with her father. The death of his wife caused the father to lose all interest in human life; plus his daughter Amelie became virtually a stranger in the house, for whom he had no real interest. He spends his time sculpting figures for his dead wife's grave, particularly a garden gnome. Amelie grows up totally devoid of the ability to become close to any other persons, and to live primarily a life of fantasy. As the film progresses she becomes attracted to a fellow she sees, and he to her, but both at a distance. By the end of the film, however, they meet and fall in love. There are many other characters in the film, all of whom have one thing in common: they all have some peculiar obsession, some of the obsessions are very far-fetched. The film moves very slowly, due in part to a portrayal of Amelie performing a vast number of practical jokes on the other characters, expressing her feelings through the practical jokes because she is unable to make herself get close enough to another person to have any relationship, even simple conversation, with them. Many of the incidents are funny, but the viewer gets a bit tired of their endless sequence. The psychological nature of the plot is really very good, but poorly portrayed.
An absolute delight to watch!
Fantastic
I wish all movies made me feel this wonderful after seeing them.
It's a bit left of centre, but it's great.
Beautiful in every way. Romantic, insiteful and utterly charming. I usually don't like subtitled filmes but this was special.
The French certainly do make some odd movies which have the ability to make the viewer laugh and feel about good about themselves afterwards. This movie is funny in all the right parts(even the sex scenes make you laugh) where a mischievous young woman(and as a young child) sets out to make other people happy while completely neglecting herself due to her fear of making the step of committment.
Innocence and Power! What a delight
Querky french movie with many wonderful moments - rejoices in the eccentric. Enjoyed it even more second time around.
the most comforting film for someone feeling lonely. beautifully designed with lots of great french quirkiness thrown in, making it very enjoyable. It really requires several viewings to see everything you miss with reading the subtitles. my favourite film.
Very much enjoyed this movie. Easy, light, no violence.
This can only happen in Paris. Shy Amelie has the ability to alter the lives of many of her friends with her coquete behaviour.
I loved it. It's quirky, romantic, beautiful. Strangely enough, my wife didn't like it.
thought provoking, funny & highly entertaining.
Another look at life from a different point of view
My partner and I differ on this one.He went to bed 1/2 way through but I stayed and continued to enjoy. I do not think this is a chick flick - it is just a srory outside the normal - someone who wants to help every those around her and is rewarded with her own love.
This film was great, it was a lovely feel good movie. It was nice to see Amelie's life come good in the end, and she ended up with a spunky boyfriend!! I would definately consider hiring this one again.
one of my most favourite films of all time - with a female hero!
Really enjoyed it! Full of simple pleasures. Watch it!!!
This movie takes a while to get into but is well worth watching
A beautiful movie, with sweet characters, a lovely romance and comedy in one. Very quirky at times. loved it!
My all time favourite film... inspires me everytime I watch it. Well worth watching.
Maybe it was me, but I gave up on this movie after about 45 minutes. It seemed slow & without much plot - perhaps that was the point.
cute and whimsical in parts
Very quirky and enjoyable.
Quite a sweet romantic movie with a few unexpected twists and turns. An enjoyable watch.
seems to be a classic . has seen the actress in recent film , hence wanting to see her original " masterpiece "
Quirky and often hilarious, the subtlety of the humour in this French film makes it not only immediately enjoyable, but worth reflection long after the film has finished.
Quirky but quaint. Interesting and funny to watch
This movie is wonderful,it made me laugh and feel just great about the world.. I wanted to go out and find weird people.
Loved it - quirky, different, unique, sweet, lovely.
This was a different, very quirky movie. I thought having subtitles would lessen its appeal, but it didn't.
Whimsical and wickedly funny in parts - a good ending too.
Good fun, worth watching. Ed
A refreshing story about people and love, that helps you to remember what's important in life.
This movie is so good that it brings a certain refreshment everytime you want to 'play it again'.
Loved it, you may need to pause it a few times to read the subtitles as they fly past. very sweet movie.
Simply delightful. This is a film that makes you feel great, and will bring a smile to your face for hours after watching it. It shows that happiness is both simple and complex, and though difficult at times, worth the journey.
Funny, clever and highly entertaining.
Quirky and fun! I could watch this ethereally beautiful woman all day!
A fresh, original story, full of meaning, pathos, romance and humour. Great viewing!
A clever foreign film but requires watching sub titles (unless you know french).
a sweet and entertaining movie, a very different concept done really well. The characters were all unique and very well cast.
In the list of my favourite movies of all time.
Pleasantly whimsical - an easy-going, undemanding romantic comedy.
Narrator's dialogue and consequently captions were too fast, also captions weren't easily read because of bad colour choice against background of film.
Unfortunately story line suffered because of this.
Didn't enjoy this movie.
A gem of a film. Full of realgallic humour. I loved it.
Great how it all comes together at the end. Well worth viewing.
Beautiful movie. Very French and the expressive acting said more than any words. Have to be in a quiet reflective mood to get the most out of it and sit back and just wait for it to happen. Better than any violence and action, but not just a chick flick.
A humourous and light hearted comedy. Some wacky characters that are very well presented in the film.
The film, just as the character Amelie, is a beautiful thing to see. The complex characters are simply drawn, you are interested in each and every one of them. The journey of Amelie is complimented by the never ending string of each supporting characters sub-plot. This is a joy to watch. If you have ever wondered 'why' strange things happen, every felt you were 'gently pushed' into loving another or maybe just lived on earth, Amelie is for you.
Beautiful film - highly recommended. Kevin, who wrote "(Don't bother!) I did not know this movie did not have English dub over. I dont watch movies unless I can hear and understand the spoken word" is just maybe a little parochial? Maybe!
I guess I'm the odd one out when I say that I don't like this film. I actually found it depressing. I felt that they almost forced the quirkiness in places. I guess that it's worth seeing as everyone else I know seemed to like it.
What a thing of beauty is Amelie! Jeunet distills all we love about the French into this movie through the charming character of Amelie and a singular visual take on Paris that the real city struggles to live up to. Witty, unpredictable and with a unique view on life, it's a charming journey, with unexpected twists and delightful observations from start to finish. Audrey Tatou became an instant Gallic icon with this and it's hard not to be totally seduced by her persona....all dark eyes, gamine bob and whacky coyness. In short...a gem.
Beautifully shot, almost dreamlike film - quirky, funny, feelgood and unexpected. I loved it - one of my faves!
If you like quirky French movies you won't be disappointed with this one
It's all been said.....quirky,beautiful,uplifting,entertaining,funny etc....
Superb stuff. It's a real story, not Hollywood smultz - that's not to say it's all very likely, but it's all believable, and definitely great fun!
Amilie's face is a real joy - she is superb at showing emotions with it.
Yes, it's in French, but if you are happy rreading subs or know a bit of French, it's unmissable. Up there with 'Delicatessen' at least, if not higher.
Sheer brilliance. Audrey Tautou's character is adorable and well portrayed. An inspiring and hilarious story of love, selflessness, and inner beauty.
Top movie. Intelligent, entertaining, very French.
A wonderful and joyous movie.
Absolutely love this movie. Funny, romantic, and wicked!!
One of my favourite movies of all time. Heartwarming, uplifting, funny and exciting. Awesome performances from the whole cast and a visual style that will have your jaw at your feet.
Loved this movie, I usually hate movies with subtitles.
Whimsical - yes, quirky - yes, touches on the philosophical (try that in a 'North American' production!) as only European films seem able. A very well made film.
One of the best movies ever - great for moments when you're not feeling your happiest - this film will change your mood instantly!
Quirky but cute. Lovely entertainment.
A fun, romantic, uplifting film about confidence and risk-taking (of the "seize the day" variety).
A bit of an odd movie, but keeps you interested.
Need to be in the right mood to keep up with the subtitles
A sweet, quirky movie beautifully made and well acted.
This is very hard to fathom at first but ends up trumps.
This is a heart-warming, quirky movie about a young woman who, while she didn't have the most wonderful childhood, gets her joy in adulthood from setting things in motion which bring love and joy to others.
This movie is spoken in French - but don't be put off by the subtitles - they are well done.
Whilst not a tear-jerker, this movie does induce the "warm fuzzies".
Beautifully and colourfully shot.
And, unlike some "quirky" movies, this one has a very satisfactory ending.
Even better the second time around!
Quirky, arthouse movie. I enjoyed this one.
An incredibly unique romantic and funny film.
Loved this film, and the outakes are fantastic! A pleasure to watch, in many scenes it was almost poetic.
I absolutely love this film and after seeing it now four times I have to say that it is the most romantic and sweet movie that I have seen in the last couple of years.
With cool footage of Paris and cute actors it is one not to be missed. Makes you feel good about the world and people again.
I did not know this movie did not have English dub over.
I dont watch movies unless I can hear and understand the spoken word.
A good movie for the hearing impaired - the sub titles are great. Very watchable.
Yeah, good one "I'm not excited" Kev - why bother reviewing it if you didn't bother watching it? Kevin, give yourself one star ie. don't bother. Amelie is a beautiful, quirky and uplifting film that doesn't feel the need to hit you over the head with sentimentality like a Hollywood feel good movie. For francophobes like our mate Kev, stick to fast food garbage like Sleepless in Seattle.
