A very watchable movie with some realistic battlefield scenes. I haven't read the book, so I can't attest to how accurately (or otherwise) the film is faithful to the book, but this is better than expected for a Hollywood production.

Without a full understanding and comprehension of the first world war it's impossible to portray it in any medium. This film carries that many prejudices and misconceptions that it undermines itself. Read the book and be content with that.

Despite the very great care taken in the making of this film I was left relatively unmoved by what has been one of history's greatest conflicts, and so for me the film fails. Almost every dramatic incident falls flat. By all accounts the original 1930 film is the one to see.

Good movie even if it is from 1979 - shows what it was like from the other side.

Well worth watching, though the original film with Franchet Tone in it was better, in my opinion.

Good film - good sense of the misery and drudgery of the first World War. Solid acting performances.
