Tim Burton is not the filmmaker we think he is, or at the very least, not the filmmaker he wants us to think he is. He is neither the master-of-the-macabre, hero of the outcast, or the Hans Christian Anderson of a new generation, primarily because of the reasons why he is considered such. He may very well have been a loner and an outcast growing up, but perhaps that is why he is unwilling to claim the crown of oddball filmmakers. After all, why else would he have spent the past decade trotting out pale 'Burton-esque' imitations of his own work? His raison d'etre has always been his gorgeous (and by that I mean 'grotesque') creature designs, but I would hardly say his imagination is 'boundless'. Ken Johnson at the New York Times, while reviewing an exhibit of Burton's filmic art at the MOMA...

Ken Johnson at the New York Times, while reviewing an exhibit of Burton's filmic art at the MOMA said, "despite Mr. Burton’s lifelong drawing and doodling habit, he never ventures into unexpected formal or technical territory." We know what to expect from a Tim Burton film. There are no more surprises. Therefore, this is not the man we want to direct Alice in Wonderland.

Burton's Alice in Wonderland is a retelling of (as well as an extension upon) Lewis Carroll's classic novels Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. We all know the story; a young girl called Alice falls down a rabbit hole and tumbles into a universe of extraordinary eccentricities, filled with timeless characters such as The Mad Hatter, The Red Queen and The Cheshire Cat. Alice 2010 takes a slightly different route. Alice (Mia Wasikowska) is now 19 years old, and is convinced that her recollections of Wonderland are simply a recurring dream. She's about to accept a proposal of marriage from a right toff when The White Rabbit (Michael Sheen) tempts her back down the rabbit hole. And back down she tumbles...

...except Wonderland is not the same place that she remembers (or should that be, doesn't remember). The kindly White Queen (Anne Hathaway) has been usurped by her bulbous-headed sister, conveniently named 'The Red Queen' (Helena Bonham Carter). As a result, all the universe's inhabitants are paralysed with fear under the shadow of the domical despot. Even The Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) has gone a little madder. Alice's old friends implore her to save them from their tyrannical ruler, and defeat her prize pet, the Jabberwocky (Christopher Lee). But Alice is still convinced that this is all a dream, and she keeps kicking her heels together and chanting "there's no place like home". Well, not really. But close enough.

I must say, the alteration of the storyline is not unwelcome. The screenplay was written by Disney gun-for-hire Linda Woolverton, no stranger to updating classic tales (she previously penned the scripts for Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King). She delivers surprises where Burton has failed to come up with his own. As mentioned at the beginning of this review, Burton is unable to adequately evoke the titular sense of wonder necessary for a 3D-blockbuster-packed with CG adaptation of Carroll's tales. It's just so ... Burton. I doubt anyone with even a passing familiarity with the filmmakers work could be surprised by any of the imagery in this film.

It also doesn't help that Mia Wasikowska's Alice acts so utterly unimpressed with what occurs throughout the film. She is our eyes into this world, and she seems completely bored, always insistent that everything around her isn't really happening. I understand why Wasikowska made the choices she did, but I don't have to like them. It can't be easy performing in front of a green screen, told to react to objects and characters she can't even see. But hey, her fellow countryman Sam Worthington was able to pull it off in Avatar - and he's hardly Laurence Olivier.

This is not a negative review of Alice in Wonderland. No, I mean it! Despite what has been said in the past few paragraphs, I actually did enjoy Burton's film. Although the character designs are not unexpected, the way these CG characters interact is nearly flawless, aided by fantastic vocal performances. Although I regretted Wasikowska's decisions as Alice, I adored the decisions made by Depp and Bonham Carter (who effortlessly remind us why they are two of the most sought after character actors in Hollywood). And even though Burton is unable to channel much suspense or awe, the film is a sumptuous visual delight. It all adds up to a mildly enjoyable adventure, sadly lacking in ambition. Curiouser and curiouser? I was left feeling only a little curious.

3/5

Three stars for a great visual flick. Whimsical, should please children and the lovers of the two books alike. Some great lines ; liked the depiction of the character of the cruel red queen; but did not like the ending, Alice as a merchant in Hong Kong, you must be joking...

Typically Tim Burton, but I thought this was better than the reviews I had read about it. Classic tale with great special effects and big name cast. Perhaps a bit too dark for the younger ones amongst us.

Always wondered where Johnnie Depp came from , what sort of childhood he had. This almost could be autobiographical, hee! hee! Alice as she has never been presented before.

An underwhelming movie with a lot of problems, but still an okay watch. Don't expect Ed Wood standard Tim Burton, but instead just something really flawed that should have been better. Alright film. Nothing to get too excited about.

Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter make for an interesting film duo. Special effects were fantastic! It wonders in a different direction to the original Alice in Wonderland (which I absolutely love), but it was brilliant, non-the-less.

Pretty damn good. Special effects were amazing and I thought Helena Bonham Carter as the Queen of Hearts played an amazing role! I like Tim Burton movies, but wouldnt really recommend it for children there are a few dark/scary parts. I think I will be adding this one to the collection!

I can see why there was so much comment about families who took children to see this when it was in the cinema (those that didn't understand who Tim Burton was or how he liked to make movies). This Alice was as dark and spectacular as all his films, loaded with undertones and metaphor and beautifully shot. Alice has grown up (a bit) and returned to 'Underland' but forgotten she'd ever been there before. Not entirely sure how I feel about the completely unrealistic ending but it's as fantastical and absurd as the rest of the movie so I guess it's fitting. Maybe she's still dreaming--she'd have to be to think it was possible in the 1800s.

Twaddle! Nothing wrong with the original story - what makes Burton and his cohorts think they can do better? The only decent version in the (unobtainable) BBC (black and white) version by Jonathan Miller with Fiona Fullerton and Malcolm Muggeridge - and I don't have a humble opinion!

This movie is really tedious! Despite all the CG and rather wonderfully created characters from the Lewis Carroll novel it all falls flat. The problem is no real story-line and the movie just lurches from one character to the next for no real reason. Johnny Depp is just phoning this one in. It's the same performance he gave in Willy Wonka. Helena BC is pretty dire. It was honestly hard to make it to the end. The two best characters were Alan Rickman and Stephen Fry...and this was just their voices.

Spectacular. I loved this film. I was very cautious about seeing it as the Alice books were my favourite as a child. This is a beautiful and sensitive reinvention, staying true to the fantastical and childlike take on the world. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are so very good at being kooky, and Mia is a true Alice.

My absolute favourite. Is slightly 'darker' than the original, but is very entertaining and very engaging. Tim Burton has done so well in the creation and obscurity of this film, which is essentially what Alice in Wonderland is. Johnny Depp is a real classic to watch. Older kids and those more 'mature' will also find this very good!

A hoot, and really well done. You shouldn't compare it with "where the wild things are" I guess, but I did and there's absolutely no doubt about what is chaff and what's hay. Knockers need to get off their high horses and enjoy it for what it is, a great movie, and it deserves better cred than some of the critics are giving it.

Worth a look after all the hype. Still I’m baffled at Tim Burtons constant casting of his wife, Helen Bonham Carter was the only low point in this classic story brought to life. Some great and mad moments in this version of a spaced out nut bags imagination brought to life. A big MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEOW goes out to my homeboy the Cheshire cat.

Very typical Tim Burton. It's a visual feast but we found it a bit dark. I think Wonderland is a bit more colourful. Really liked Helena Bonham Carter as the melon-headed red queen and the lead Aussie girl is good. Not sure why Johnny Depp threw a Scottish accent in every now and then and the whole futterwacken thing was B grade. So the production values are great and some of the scenes quite interesting and funny, but it ends up becoming a final battle scene, which I found entirely unoriginal and not my vision of Alice at all.
