With pulsating special effects from Weta Workshop, Aftershock is the blockbuster tale of two of most powerful earthquakes to ever hit China. On what was otherwise a still, calm day in 1976 in Tangshan, China the countryside was ripped apart by a devastating earthquake that would take the lives of over 240,000 people. At the heart of the monstrous disaster a mother must make a heartbreaking decision to save only one of her two children, but when the abandoned child Fang Deng (Jingchu Zhang, Rush Hour 3) miraculously survives she must find a way to rebuild her life alone, far away from Tangshan. Over the next 30 years Tangshan and Fang Deng slowly recover from the tragedy but when another enormous earthquake devastates the area, Fang Deng returns home to face the ruin and find her long lost family and the peace that comes with forgiveness

If you read the reviews, you see that this movie, for a large part is incredibly slow. At over 2 hours this could have done with some judicious editing. That aside, for true movie buffs, this is in my opinion a Cinematic Masterpiece. It is a fictional story based on True events in Tangshan, China, where over 240,000 people were killed due to a massive earthquake. It is a story of choices, of loss, of love and forgiveness. It is extraordinary in the way is captures the Chinese people and Westerners should find this aspect of the particularly fascinating. In addition there is some wonderful acting in scenes that would have been incredibly difficult and could have easily been ruined. This movie is not perfect, it is not for everyone, but I will argue, that every trust masterpiece has its flaws, this is no exception, but never-the-less deserves 5 stars.

Great effects and DTS 5.1 sound on Blu-ray. Very sad story; however it does get a bit lengthy and therefore slow-ish in the middle. Still worth a watch though.
