Wade Whitehouse is a sheriff of a small New Hampshire town who achieved nothing in life in the opinion of his ex-wife Lillian and daughter Jill and is a heavy drinker. His girlfriend Margie accepts him the way he is. On the first day of the hunting season, Wade's friend Jack takes a wealthy businessman to hunt - and only Jack returns alive. Wade decides to play detective and starts investigating the case despite the fact Jack insists it was an accidental self-inflicted shot.

Overall, a bit of a downer. A good cast, but... Bleak is the word for this one.

I really wish Quicklix allowed negative star ratings as this movie deserves it. A small town part-time cop (Nick Nolte) funbles his way through the investigation of a hunting accident as a background to telling the depressing story of his depressing life as the son of an alcoholic who can't escape the cycle of abuse. The script may well be peppered with brilliant dialogue but you'd never know it because Nolte doesn't open his mouth to do more than mumble which is presumably why his long suffering girlfriend (Sissy Spacek) left him in the end. Either that or she was bored to tears because NOTHING HAPPENED. The MESSAGE of the story, that hitting your children is a shitty thing to do, is clear from the outset so you can save yourself 90+ minutes of tedium and not bother.

The movie had a very good cast and a worthwhile message to deliver - however the movie itself failed to entertain
