Totally sexist and politically incorrect but thoroughly enjoyable. Pass me another amber fluid and make it icy cold you pommy bastard. 3.5 stars

Time hasn't been kind to Bazza and his mates: what was once a scandalous comedy (and a breakthrough one for Oz at that) is now a bit on the tame-and-lame side. Worth a look for a trip beck in the time machine, though.

One of my favourite films of all time. This put Australian cinema back on the map for Australian audiences brought up on a diet of imported English and American comedies. That newfound self-belief in ourselves made it funny, irreverent and brim with energy and ideas. It engaged us and made us feel proud to be who we are. Even if Barry and Aunt Edna made us cringe at times, we knew -- and liked -- someone like them. Not only did it open the door for many comedies about ourselves, it told the rest of the world we can tell stories and tell them as good as anyone else.

A cult hit upon release with Australian audiences, it can still be funny today, but its over-the-top political incorrectness and blunt, unsubtle humour puts the cringe-factor on ?extreme?. It runs far too long; some of the content could have been saved for the sequel, "Barry McKenzie Holds His Own", which actually did far better at the box office. Granted, his ocker Aussie attitude is funny, but also becomes annoying as the story drags on. Some say Crocker's songs are the best bits, and they are certainly original, but "hilarious"? "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie" will go down as a landmark in Australian cinema, but we should do everything in our power to make sure that overseas audiences do not see the majority of Australians as Barry McKenzies (or, for that matter, Mick Dundees!).

Crude, basic and an absolute beauty. Australia laughing at itself before everyone got so serious and politically correct
