Real SEAL

Jeremy Renner is a fine actor, and he seems like a really nice guy, but I would never suggest he be sent to defuse bombs in Iraq just because he starred in The Hurt Locker. Conversely, the real life Navy SEALs that populate the cast of Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh's Act of Valour are no doubt heroic individuals with unparalleled skills in the field. They certainly won't be called upon to play Hamlet anytime soon. This isn't a documentary, despite its unique showcase of professional soldiers, both active and retired (full names have not been released on account of their continued security). But just because professionals have been hired instead of civilians doesn't mean the movie is any closer to capturing truth.

When it comes to cinema, actors - or at least the good ones - are the real professionals, able to capture the essence of a character, or create one from scratch; to wordlessly convey emotion and experience change.

The soldiers featured here do not have these tools, and they even struggle to communicate the rote dialogue regarding military strategy in a natural manner (let alone the casual patter - oh, good heavens, the casual patter!). Since when did 'having the uniform at home' qualify as the only pre-requisite for someone's employment? If that has indeed become the case, you can look forward to my imminent casting in Easter Bunny: Origins.

Act of Valour primarily concerns two officers, Dave and Rorke; the latter has a pregnant wife at home, and speaks often of leaving the force and taking a safe security posting at the White House, so it's clear he will definitely get back safely. When CIA agent Morales (Roselyn Sánchez) is kidnapped and tortured for tracing drug smuggler Christo (Alex Veadov), Navy SEAL Team 7 is sent in to rescue her by any means necessary.

We're offered a nice insight into the skilled approach taken by the SEALs to infiltrate her captors' compound, and execute without hesitation. Too often, however, the action takes on a clumsy first-person approach, complete with night-vision goggles and clarity-obfuscating chaos. Act of Valour is probably just an ad for the inevitable video game; it's a much more lucrative industry than moviemaking these days. Once Morales has been recovered, her intel reveals that Christo has ties to a terrorist cell intent on attacking America from within. Dave, Rorke, and the rest of their men will have to act fast - and, with valour? - to save the U.S. of A from her foreign enemies.

Scripted by Kurt Johnstad, the film's thematic geopolitical muddiness and exhausting, unquestioning jingoism - though troubling - are but a small stain compared to the oil-spill awfulness of the execution. There is not a single human being in Team 7, whereas the terrorists - played by actual actors - seem to have at least a slight shade of grey to their evil. The two/only explosive set pieces are divided by a canyon of cringe-worthy dialogue delivered by acting amateurs, and depicted with cinematic incompetence. The SEALs' service to their country and the world is appreciated. When it comes to the arts, I respectfully request they stand down.

1.5/5

The plot was interesting and the action was full on. The cast being real marines really nailed the action scenes but minor let down was the wooden acting at times with some of the poor lines in the script which you would expect. All in all the marines did a watchable job

How many people can you shoot or blow up in one movie? Maybe it was an attempt to conceal the poor acting. Snore.

This film was like a fictional documentary, and they didn't pull it off. Bad acting, no real story and quite embarrassing to watch really. If it was a documentary with a narrator that could narrate, then it might have a chance. Sorry Act of Valour

A great movie. Love the fact they used real Navy Seals to make the movie. If you have any interest in the military and have served in the armed forces...you will love this movie. I'm going to buy it...'Straight to the Pool Room'...

An elite team of Navy SEALs embark on a covert mission to recover a kidnapped CIA agent. Act of Valour set out to create a film with 100% authentic and realistic action sequences and promote the lives of US Navy Seals. In that aspect it succeeded, however, failed everywhere else. The advertisement of using real navy seals as the main characters creates a level of military authenticity and accuracy that I have not seen in a film for a long time. All equipment and vehicles used are used correctly whilst dialogue and radio chatter inside of combat shows detail that inexperienced eyes might miss. However, acting is not something these Seals train for at basic! Dialogue outside of combat is weak at best and any scene trying to get some form of emotion out of the audience is lost as soon as one opens their mouth. Not many good things can be said about the story line. A rather unimaginative plot coupled with the stereotypical 'bad guy' does little but create a backdrop for the numerous fire fights and special forces insertions.

Great to see the ins and outs of Navy Seals - the action sequences were well edited & scripted, a lot of attention to details (ie, types of weapon used, etc) - very impressive. This movie is worth watching if only for that. As mentioned by everyone else, acting is quite wooden and flat - but not bad considering they're not actors.

I really hope that diving on a grenade is not something our elite warriors do . I would think picking it up and throwing it back a better option. Good action ,some great guns ,poor acting I really thought that they were real people thats how bad the acting is. But you have to chant though out the movie USA USA to make it belivable.

You don't watch this movie for acting. You watch it for the actions, the authenticity of tactics and weapons and the combat skills these elite soldiers demonstrate. If these are what you are after, then you won't be disappointed.

A good action film with some patchy performances (they're real Navy SEALs didn't you know?). The action sequences - inspired by Call of Duty - are one of a kind and very exciting. The film does action so well that the dramatic character scenes and the wooden delivery of the voice over seem to let this one down a bit.

In terms of skills, I didnt need to be convinced of what professional soldiers do or are capable of. Even if Andy McNabs books are even half true professional soldiers like these guys are in a different zone. So, if you didnt know that then this movie gives you a glimpse. The sentiment and 'acting' are solid and I think no real issue. The story is just ok, but thats not bad. So.... i dont know, it was an ok watch, it all depends if you're interested. 3/4

I think it portrayed a pretty realistic view of things and though quite confronting at time, as with the more realistic movies, the story line was more solid that edge of your seat action and plots.

Couldn't disagree more with Simon's review. This was one of the coolest things I've watched in a long time. Myself and everybody else I was with at the cinema LOVED it. As a movie critic you will focus on the lack of acting skills that the Navy SEAL's have. As a movie lover and/or a first-person war-game lover, you will (like us) sit on the edge of your seat and marvel at these incredible soldiers and the level of skill and precision they need to pull off a successful mission. My opinion - Really awesome watch, highly recommended.
