Did not run as a full screen. Looked like an old 16mm SBS movie taking up the centre of the TV. Could not watch it. Tried both versions on the intro page both the same. As it wasn't running in digital mode didn't bother. Scenes in submarines etc are dark so it was not worth trying to see what was going on. Shame as other reviewers have rated it well

Finally got to watch the extended cut of the Abyss and although it is a long movie, it holds up really well and contains the best acting in any James Cameron film thus far. No offense Arnold. I'll assume everyone knows the film's premise, so I'll just note that the extra scenes in this version help flesh out the story a bit more, in particular the way the last reel plays out. Without going into spoiler territory, I'll just say it ups the tension with an eleventh hour element that affects all of humanity. The special effects are amazing, especially considering the film is over twenty years old and the film contains what has to be the best underwater chase scene ever committed to film. Seriously. On top of all the story enhancements, the acting is top notch across the board. Michael Biehn's turn as Coffey is the best role he has ever done. Homeboy should have got an Oscar, or at least a nomination.

A bit too technical and hard to follow at first (we did a bit of back-tracking to try and make sense of it) but it improved as it went along. A bit preachy in its message but the action sequences were gripping enough. I rather liked the portrayal of the 'mysterious beings', though they were disappointingly clich?d when shown close up at the end. Generally satisfying but I wish we'd opted for the shorter Theatrical version, as 3 hours was just too long.

It's way past being just a sci-fic movie. It's so humanly possible and yet unbelievable. A happy ending crowns it all.

Technically from the year it was made it was very good. Was surprised when I saw the year of making. Acting could have been better, but the action keep me interested. Light entertainment value.

Sci-Fi come fantasy. Even after all these years it is still engrosing and clever in the concept and presentation of the story. Provides different angles of assessment of the hunman spirit and psychie under extreme circumstances. If you haven't seen it, make the effort to do so.
