Suppose you picked up a newspaper and your life was the front page story…and everything they said was accurate, but none of it was true. That’s the powerful premise of this intelligent, absorbing drama from Oscar® winning director SYDNEY POLLACK (1986, Best Director, OUT OF AFRICA). PAUL NEWMAN and SALLY FIELD deliver charismatic star performances and head a cast that includes JOSEF SOMMER, BOB BALABAN and WILFORD BRIMLEY in a searing expose on the power of the press. Tightly written and expertly executed, ABSENCE OF MALICE has all the right ingredients for outstanding screen entertainment.

The story is really quite excellent but the performances but that of the unfortunate friend are just wet, having gone for pretty screen filling leads rather than genuine character actors (which, I must admit, Newman has since become). A different director and better casting could have made this a blockbuster.

Sally Field plays the journalist so well and Paul Newman is wonderful. Interesting to consider what the press think is acceptable to print today compared to that of the early 80's. Very good film.
