I love this movie, Its charming, sweet and funny. The friendship between the two main characters is lovely and the acting is excellent. I love how fiesty Helene is and also how very kind she is to the people in the store. It may not be to everyone's taste as other reviewers have said; but I love it.

Fantastic reviews but be careful with your selection, movies is charming but slow - dealing with life styles, cultures, personalities, not for everybody. You need a love & understanding of english literature (which I don't have) to really appreciate it. Superb cast obviously.

Such devotion to a love of books and beautifully portrayed by Hopkins & Bancroft. It made me want to order a volume or two as well.

Thankyou for this! We enjoyed the film after loving the book years ago. There were some imperfections in the film - just to let you know.

My wife's weeping because of the nostalgia of this film told me that this was a good selection. Brought back memories of how things were when life was no so hectic.

Good performance form Antony Hopkins but overall a litle slow - one for a wet weekend.

An excellent presentation of a difficult story in that the main players never actually meet. Good acting by all characters.

Moderatley entertaining but not enough to sustain a movie of this length. Obnoxious over-use of cigarette smoking throughout which had nothing to do with the movie. No doubt the makers got so much money from the makers that they continued on to finish an otherwise very ordinary piece.

Lovers of literature will enjoy this movie despite its limited narrative and lack of character development. A story based on correspondence by letter is difficult to present cinematically, and for variety the director resorts eventually to having the main characters reciting their letters directly to the camera -- a technique that breaks the illusion of reality he had earlier created. Nevertheless, "84 Charing Cross Road" is a sensitive portrayal of the lives of decent but quite different people brought together by a love of books and what they offer. Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft are wonderful as the main protagonists. "84 Charing Cross Road" is essential;ly about how the melancholy of missed opportunity in life can be redeemed by a deep attachment to something that is, without fanfare, noble and vitalising.

This delightful film closely follows the true account of a chance encounter (by mail) between a feisty New York writer and a courteous London bookseller, which lasted many years and involved much more than the buying & selling of books. Terrific acting by Anne Bancroft and the rest of the cast.

84 Charing Cross was a wonderful story of wishful thinking based on what was actually happening to two people. The slow fondness for each developed over time and made me think of the people I have known who have moved to live on the other side of the continent but have cemented their friendship with me over time - often more so than those around me. The settings were brilliant and as I remember things from my very early childhood - mannerisms, speech, and especially manners and eccentricities. A gentle and warm movie and as usual, Anthony Hopkins was brilliant.
