The laughing cure

Whoever was responsible for christening this funny movie about a serious disease did not have an enviable task. Jonathan Levine's 50/50 went through a number of name changes before landing on that vague final figure (the numeric representation of a shrug). First called I'm With Cancer, it was then retitled to Live With It, and then, as the producers pow-wowed, let it exist briefly with the temporary - but admirably direct! - label Untitled Cancer Comedy. This movie went through titles faster than Homer Simpson experienced the five stages of grieving. Though I can sympathise with anyone cautious of seeing a light-hearted film about the very thing all human beings are terrified of, 50/50 is good enough to encourage people to confront their fears and laugh about death (and life) for at least ...

Though I can sympathise with anyone cautious of seeing a light-hearted film about the very thing all human beings are terrified of, 50/50 is good enough to encourage people to confront their fears and laugh about death (and life) for at least 100 minutes.

Based on screenwriter Will Reiser's own experience battling the disease, 50/50 stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as softly-spoken radio producer and no-getter Adam. His fairly unspectacular world is turned upside down when he discovers a large tumour growing on his spine. He's subjected to chemotherapy treatments, and, even more painfully, winds up on the receiving end of an endless stream of pity from people who'd never before given him the time of day. Adam's artist girlfriend (Bryce Dallas Howard) reveals herself to be wildly ill-equipped for the task of taking care of him, while his mother's (Anjelica Huston) brand of concern leads to some mild smothering. As Adam slowly freaks out about his state (and perhaps eventual lack of state), he finds he can only turn to his kind-hearted but crass buddy Kyle (Seth Rogen, Reiser's real life friend and producer), and an inexperienced young counsellor (Anna Kendrick) for help.

Gordon-Levitt's performance is wonderfully calibrated; warmly funny and subtle, eventually erupting into a fit of anger and terror in the picture's climactic and best scene. Rogen, Kendrick and Huston all offer exemplary support (much better than their characters, anyway), though Howard - who is indeed good here - should ask her agent to book her less roles in which she has to play a terrible person.

For all of the attention 50/50 has gotten for being the 'cancer comedy', it's received not nearly enough praise for being so moving and emotionally satisfying. Much of the comic situations hinge on Rogen's traditional - but still effective - brand of humour, and less on the semi-comic nuances of being sick. Where Reiser's experience pays off is in his ability to convey the fear felt by the film's subject, and shared by the audience (Adam's pleas for his mother's comfort in the final act will be unsettling, tear-inducing viewing for most). Levine's tender directorial touch - much better than on the loosy-goosy stoner flick The Wackness - complement's Reiser's script perfectly. It's a lovely, wide-eyed screenplay that yearns for life in the face of death; 50/50 feels like the work of a new artist who not only lived with it, but also lived so that he could tell us all about it.

4/5

I found this movie really boring and slow the whole way through. Fairly predictable story line as well.

Great Movie ! Brings back lots of memories of my own time in hospital when I was nineteen. Very realistic portrayal of characters in this situation. This is now one of my favourite movies of 2012. Joseph Gordon-Levitt has the X-factor - always great to check out any movie he is in.

I really enjoyed this movie which explores the impact of cancer diagnosis and treatment on a young man and his friends and loved ones. The only complaint I have is the way things panned out with the psychologist. One day I'd like to see a movie in which their is no sexual tension between client and therapist and where the psychologist doesn't violate ethical boundaries, which in real life would mean giving up a hard fought for career.

Ok so I think it had a good enough storyline but was a little blah.... It was a bit too flat in places, not enough emotion from the characters I dont think - I would have liked to have seen it dramatised a little where as it just moves through the motions. Could have been better, still I would recommend it if you are running out of things to watch.

Quite a good movie. Seth Rogan is once again type cast as the friend who's a pot smoking d**k, but it does work for this movie. JGL is brilliant and fits the bill very well. If you're looking for a movie similar to Reign Over Me, or Into the Wild, this will suit you perfectly.

While a good basic story the over-the-top, inappropriate, out of context swearing makes this movie one to avoid! Such a shame!

One of the best movies of 2012. Crazy to think JGL took the role only 2 weeks before filming and knocked it out of the ball park.

I give it only 2 and a half stars. It is a comedy about having a serious cancer plus some elements of romantic comedy, for sugar coating and for broader appeal. Of course there is a happy ending, what else can one expect from an American movie... The main character can move normally despite having a serious spinal cancer. Even after the major surgery where they supposedly removed lots of tissue from his hips and spine, etc. he still can move as if nothing serious was going on. The only signs of major surgery is a nit vertical wound along his spine. There is also one mild scene of vomiting and one scene of shaving his hair (but no signs of loosing hair before that shaving scene). No real loosing weight is shown, instead they merely show the image of the scales suggesting that he is loosing weight, and so on and on. In other words the whole cancer is depicted as if it was a mild flue. It actually can be offensive for people who suffered (or had a close family member who suffered) a real serious health problems like for instance a devastating cancer. The movie shows a funeral of some other cancer patient but the main character of course goes on to live happy ever after....American movies are so predictable, the plot serves maximasing the profits, the audience wants a happy ending both health wise and regarding the romantic story. The audience gets what the audience wants. End of story.

Inspired by a true story, a comedy centered on a 27-year-old guy who learns of his cancer diagnosis, and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease. Loved it. A great mixture of comedy and drama. Characters were marvelous

Loved this movie. JGL is one of my favourite actors and he's great in 50/50. I liked how near the end he finally realises that it's not all about him; that his family and friends are in this with him, and until that moment he hasn't really seen how his illness is affecting those around him. There's lots of nice little subtle touches like that in this film. It's sad, it's funny, it's cathartic. Can't wait to see the next roles Gordon-Levitt chooses.
