A series of armed robberies—seven armoured cars in 18 months—has left nine guards dead and €2 million stolen. There are only two men who can stop this violent gang: head of the Search and Action Squad, Leo Vrinks (Daniel Auteuil) and the head of the Anti-Crime Unit, Denis Klein (Gérard Depardieu). Their chief, Robert Mancini (André Dussollier), lays down a challenge to the two men: whichever man captures the gang will replace him as the head of the Criminal Investigations Department.

The race begins for the two men—once friends, now bitter rivals. They have different methods and different teams—but both share a love for the same woman, Vrinks' wife, Camille (Valeria Golino).

So very very lame. Bad acting. Bad script. Just because its French doesn't excuse it.

Slightly better than average story - made much better by the brilliant Daniel Autieul and Gerard Depardieu and a solid cast.

What a great movie. Auteil and Depardieu always good and together as estranged old friends unbeatable. Paris is the star of the movie of course but the people help out heaps. While violence is there it isn't gratuitous and it doesn't replace plot. It shows the narrow divide between the forces of Light and Darkness and what happens when ends start justifying means. Depardieu is riveting as the embittered second rater for whom the job has replaced his life. He's sold his soul to the Devil and so does Auteil's character (almost). This film shows that movies are about telling a good story, if they don't do that the rest is a waste of time, money and film. Recently in the US made rubbish-I paid to see "Couples Retreat"!!. They should look at European cinema, they can still make a movie you want to watch. Great stuff-totally recommended.

Seems the French know how to make excellent gritty drama. 36 Quai des Orfevres combines ambition, power, corruption and office politics in this pretty violent, gritty, pithy flick. The two anti-heros are perfectly cast; Depardeux subtly but menacingly lends a just-below-the-surface underbelly of self-serving misanthropy to his character. Plot twists and turns keep the viewer enthralled and gasping as a matrix of thin blue lines becomes a dark and deadly game of hopscotch. Could this be "policing" at it's worst? Thank goodness it's only a film. The Gallic exploration of moral ambiguity runs throughout this terrific screenplay. Victor Hugo would love it; this reveiwer most certainly did. HIghly recommended.

Uncompromisingly tough cops and robbers in typically hard French style. At times it's hard to decide who is worse: the bad guys or the cops. Plenty of double and triple crossing here and no shortage of violence and sorrow and regrets; very touching and disturbing between the frequent bouts of bloody mayhem.

Not bad but was surprised at some of the other reviews. Not all that I thought it would be but still watchable

Rather more graphic violence than I'm used to watching, but both Daniel Auteuil & Gerard Depardieu were convincing characters, and the supporting cast members were all very believable. The tension is sustained throughout, & the ending, although pretty much as expected, does not disappoint

Clever and gripping French crime thriller - your sympathies are like to switch several times between the protagonists.

Depardieu and Auteuil are formidable!Great "policier",I love the way it was filmed;in the extras section the filmmaker said he had been thinking about making this movie for 10 years and you can see it is his baby.

If I had known it was in French, I would not have picked it! Tried to keep up with the subtitles, but gave up say 1/3 through. Was OK I guess.
