A new time, a new odyssey, a new chance to confront the enigmas arising from the daring Jupiter mission of the year 2001. Crew members aboard the Leonov are on course to rendezvous with the still-orbiting Discovery. What they don't know is that they are equally on course for an uncharted realm of human destiny. And that their fate will rest on the silicon shoulders of the computer they reawaken, HAL-9000. In this awesome film based on Arthur C. Clarke's sequel novel to 2001: A Space Odyssey, filmmaker Peter Hyams (Capricorn One, Outland) crafts an absorbing spellbinder that builds on its landmark movie predecessor yet is captivating in its own right. The year is 2010. Time to discover we are not alone.

this was follow up to '2001 a space odyssey' as i remember. Both titles were very highly regarged in their time as being 'extremely visionary'........... and still are. Recomended view (remembering release year)

Most people compare this movie to it's prequel - 2001: A Space Odyssey, and therefore rate this lower. This movie does not have the visual appeal that Kubrick's movie does, however does quite and excellent job in taking the story forward. An original Arthur C. Clarke series of novels, the story is bizarre and portrays Clarke's unique style of science fiction. Set in a parallel universe where the Cold War has dragged onto 2010, some aspects of the movie maybe dated but for anyone that is a fan of sci-fi this movie is a must watch. Almost every detail is explained from the first movie so don't expect another open ended movie. Just enjoy the ride!

Can't compare Kubrick's 2001 Space Odyessy with this sequel from Hyams... 2010 The Year We Make Contact, but it is enjoyable, and as other members say, the film tends to leave you with more questions than answers. Not sure of the casting, however the film was made in 1984 and the visuals and set production are outstanding for it's time.

Interesting. And I sort of liked the feel. The story though spoilt my view of 2001 (which was better left unexplained).

a little slow to begin with but good sci-fi for when it was made.

Not as good as Stanley's but worth watching if you liked 2001.

Finally we now know what the first movie was about. Not as slow as the first and easy to follow. An amazing ending.

So much better than 2001. Watch out for Helen Mirren with her Russian accent. My interest tapered off near the end though.

Not in the same league as the truly seminal 2001, but much more approachable and less abstract. It also answers some of the obsurities of 2001. Worth watching as a sequel.
