MODERATE SUPERNATURAL THEMES AND VIOLENCE, INFREQUENT MODERATE COARSE LANGUAGE

Director: Mikael Håfström
Actors: John Cusack, Mary McCormack, Andrew Lee Potts, Samuel L. Jackson

Based on the short story by Stephen King, written by Matt Greenberg and Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski, this is about renowned horror novelist Mike Enslin (John Cusack) only believes what he can see with his own two eyes. After a string of best-sellers discrediting paranormal events in the most infamous haunted houses and graveyards around the world, he scoffs at the concept of an afterlife. Enslin's phantom-free run of long and lonely nights is about to change forever when he checks into suite 1408 of the notorious Dolphin Hotel for his latest project, Ten nights in haunted hotel rooms. Defying the warnings of the hotel manager (Samuel L Jackson), the author is the first person in years to stay in the reputedly haunted room.

OK to the knockers watch it again as I am sure you only looked at it the first time, so this time actually watch it. Why get it if you are not going to watch it. As for the typical Stephen King ending you lost it as well. Overall the movie done what it was made to do and that is entertain.

I'm not normally a fan of Stephen King movies, finding them to usually disappoint by not delivering on their promise in a highly bland manner, but 1408 is one of the few exceptions. While it does take some time setting up the history of the characters, etc, once it gets started on the main premise, it actually has you reeled in. You sometimes think you've caught the directors out with inconsistencies by thinking 'that wasn't there before' or 'there's no way that body would have reached there', but then a few scenes later it's all explained with well thought out scenes and monologue, so there's a small amount of the movie that makes you think. The happy-but-not-so-happy ending that came with a slight twist is typical of the King norm, which is perhaps not the best it could've been, with some questions raised and a whole new premise introduced that is just ignored (perhaps setting up a sequal? unlikely), but the movie makes you jump, cringe, think and feel for more than two hours.

I really enjoyed watching this film. Typical Stephen King storyline (the main character's a cynical writer going though some internal psychological struggle) but I still felt it had some suspense and unexpected twists. The ending does somewhat fizzle out from the gripping first hour, but I kind of expect that from horror, so I wasn't really that disappointed. John Cusack was convincing and engaging as a man both worthy of admiration and reproach. And Samual L Jackson's appearance, although brief, really gave the movie a nice edge that stayed there long after he wasn't in the plot. Definitely recommend it.

Could have been quite good but somehow the pacing felt a little off throughout the movie. Good idea but somehow just didn’t translate that well onto the screen. I wanted to like it more but just couldn’t help feeling dissatisfied with a lot of elements in the film. Also found John Cusack quite annoying in his leading role although others think he was brilliant so it’s probably a personal thing whether you will like or hate this movie.

A man who specializes in debunking paranormal occurrences checks into the fabled room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel. Soon after settling in, he confronts genuine terror. Very frustrating movie to watch because of its inconsistency. Some really really good moments intertwined with ridiculous offerings. This could have been a very good horror film

Toooo much like Final Destination with the token black actor attempting to direct traffic away from the inevitable train wreck that the dumb white guy steers towards... Who's the idiot that miscast John Cusack in these dogs?? Anyhow...Trailer once again misleadingly complimentary to the main premise... Total nonsense!

Like all of the classic Stephen King inspired movies, this was brilliant. It has the visual horror, the psychological density and that factor that makes you think, "what would I do if this were happening to me". You get scared, then sad, then relieved, then shocked when you realise what you thought was real wasn't and that it's not over yet! You think, "oh why didn't he listen to all the warnings?" but then side with the room because, let's face it, it can do some pretty neat tricks. This is a good watch, definitely has some jumps and some oh-I-can't-look moments.

This is quite an intelligent "haunted house" story where the hotel room tortures you with the regrets in your life to the point of suicide. John Cusack is great as the sceptic and the aftermath keeps you thinking.

1408 is the worst John Cusack movie I have ever seen. I can only think that he must have needed the money, as the plot goes nowhere and is very C grade scary movie. It's two hours of my life that I'll never get back.

A movie that promised lots but delivered little. Storyline was good at first but then fell away when filming entered Room 1408 to a point where the movie became almost farcical. Not being a horror/supernatural flick person , I thought that this may provide something decent within the genre, but was quite disappointed.

Very scary 1st half. The second half isn't scary at all, but overall it's worth a watch. For the most part it's one man in an evil-as-sign-your-soul-over room - so it's more of a psychological horror than a lets-see-how-far-the-FCC(??notamericanso...please forgive me if that's wrong)-will-let-us-get-the-body-count-up-but-still-let-teenagers-see-it sort of movie (wow...the long titles Hollywood makes these days...!). And for those geeks out there - the version that Quickflix sent me was the 'alternative'/directors ending. The original ending was based on American test screening. The ending you will see via Quickflix is the directors cut. Personally, from what I read of the original ending, I think we got the better deal.

I have to say I loved this movie. Of course, John Cusak is high on my list of favourite actors so that may sway my rating somewhat, but honestly, I was on the edge of my seat or hiding behind a cushion because of the tension. Even my blase, seen-everything-shocking, 27 year old son, who walked in about a quarter of the way through, sat down and watched, and was engrossed. Top ratings just for that!

Films that really on nothing but one character in a room either work beautifully or drag on endlessly. This one sort of fell into the cracks for me in that to begin with it had me, and then it all just got a bit silly. Not terrible, but not great either.

Apparently there are alternate endings to this movie and neither of them are very satisfying. Cusack's character seems to go from a non-believing sceptic to a fully-fledged "I see dead people" ghostbuster pretty quickly. He was too easily rattled for such a cynic.

This is a really good adaption of a Stephen King story, and actually a really good story, more of a pschological thriller than a horror movie. As noted with other reviews the tension builds all the way through it and then is a little let down at the end, Highly recommend watching this one.

Cusack just isn't good enough to pull off a movie single-handed. It went from midly scary to "please let him die or get out of the room just as long as it's OVER" long before the end. I was not engaged and picked up a book about 30 minutes in. When will people get that Shawshank was a fluke and not every stephen king short story is worth making a feature-length movie out of?

Fantastic!. Horror movies have been very average so far - even those made from Mr King's short stories - this one was great. Slow going at first - but sucks you in. This film had the potential to be a great horror movie but unfortunately misses the mark. Although I'm a John Cusack fan, his portrail of the main character at times bordered on the farcical and the film ended up to be weak and a bit confusing. The film could not draw me into the real horror of the situation.

The scary movie is not a genre I usually go for but I really enjoyed this one. It's really quite amazing that it worked. It's basically one character in one room. That one character though, is in good hands with John Cusack, who pulls off another captivating performance that has you glued to the screen from beginning to end. The last quarter of the film gets a little shakey but all in all, this one's well worth the ride.

This is much better than the average Stephen King movie adaptation. Far less reliant on slash and gore than others in this genre, 1408 is a far more satisfying horror film that has some genuinely scary moments. John Cusack carries the film as he is alone on screen for much of the film's duration and his reactions to events are what makes this movie work. Maybe the ending could have been more satisfying, but overall it is one hell of a ride and I recommend it highly.
