The end result of this movie,I found terrifying, very entertaining thriller
OK to the knockers watch it again as I am sure you only looked at it the first time, so this time actually watch it.
Why get it if you are not going to watch it. As for the typical Stephen King ending you lost it as well.
Overall the movie done what it was made to do and that is entertain.
I'm not normally a fan of Stephen King movies, finding them to usually disappoint by not delivering on their promise in a highly bland manner, but 1408 is one of the few exceptions.
While it does take some time setting up the history of the characters, etc, once it gets started on the main premise, it actually has you reeled in. You sometimes think you've caught the directors out with inconsistencies by thinking 'that wasn't there before' or 'there's no way that body would have reached there', but then a few scenes later it's all explained with well thought out scenes and monologue, so there's a small amount of the movie that makes you think.
The happy-but-not-so-happy ending that came with a slight twist is typical of the King norm, which is perhaps not the best it could've been, with some questions raised and a whole new premise introduced that is just ignored (perhaps setting up a sequal? unlikely), but the movie makes you jump, cringe, think and feel for more than two hours.
not bad, i liked the original ending better
This movie wasn't too bad, we enjoyed it. Not scary at all but suspenseful. Recommend watching.
An excellent horror movie. A slight pity about the ending but well worth watching.
I really enjoyed watching this film. Typical Stephen King storyline (the main character's a cynical writer going though some internal psychological struggle) but I still felt it had some suspense and unexpected twists. The ending does somewhat fizzle out from the gripping first hour, but I kind of expect that from horror, so I wasn't really that disappointed. John Cusack was convincing and engaging as a man both worthy of admiration and reproach. And Samual L Jackson's appearance, although brief, really gave the movie a nice edge that stayed there long after he wasn't in the plot. Definitely recommend it.
took avery long time in getting here....
Watched and returned...
Could have been quite good but somehow the pacing felt a little off throughout the movie. Good idea but somehow just didn’t translate that well onto the screen. I wanted to like it more but just couldn’t help feeling dissatisfied with a lot of elements in the film. Also found John Cusack quite annoying in his leading role although others think he was brilliant so it’s probably a personal thing whether you will like or hate this movie.
A man who specializes in debunking paranormal occurrences checks into the fabled room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel. Soon after settling in, he confronts genuine terror. Very frustrating movie to watch because of its inconsistency. Some really really good moments intertwined with ridiculous offerings. This could have been a very good horror film
Toooo much like Final Destination with the token black actor attempting to direct traffic away from the inevitable train wreck that the dumb white guy steers towards... Who's the idiot that miscast John Cusack in these dogs??
Anyhow...Trailer once again misleadingly complimentary to the main premise...
This had me going. Was fairly haunting. Should keep you on the edge of your seat.
Like all of the classic Stephen King inspired movies, this was brilliant. It has the visual horror, the psychological density and that factor that makes you think, "what would I do if this were happening to me". You get scared, then sad, then relieved, then shocked when you realise what you thought was real wasn't and that it's not over yet! You think, "oh why didn't he listen to all the warnings?" but then side with the room because, let's face it, it can do some pretty neat tricks. This is a good watch, definitely has some jumps and some oh-I-can't-look moments.
This is quite an intelligent "haunted house" story where the hotel room tortures you with the regrets in your life to the point of suicide. John Cusack is great as the sceptic and the aftermath keeps you thinking.
i wasn't expecting much but i do love steph king books but i really liked it. i got something out of it and what a great cast Jackson rules in this film and what a great story and the effects were just amazing i wish there was just more to it and expaneded on it and sometimes it can be confusing i just wish they did it a different way.
1408 is the worst John Cusack movie I have ever seen. I can only think that he must have needed the money, as the plot goes nowhere and is very C grade scary movie. It's two hours of my life that I'll never get back.
Frightening, but a possibility.
Not terribly scary but a very good film never the less. John Cusack is great and it has a very good story line. Definitly a thriler.
Creepy in parts. Typical ridiculous and confusing Stephen King movie ending. If it wasn't for John Cusack, it would have been laughable.
Can't put my finger on it, but I really didn't enjoy this movie. Not very scary at all. 3/5
A good entertaining/weird thriller.
Outstanding !! I am far from a huge fan of this genre but this example totally exceeded my expectation. With a highly plausible plot and excellent acting by the lead actors , this movie actually achieved something that normally does not happen in thriller / horrors - it SCARED me !!! I hope you enjoy it also :)
not bad the first time viewed.
A movie that promised lots but delivered little. Storyline was good at first but then fell away when filming entered Room 1408 to a point where the movie became almost farcical. Not being a horror/supernatural flick person , I thought that this may provide something decent within the genre, but was quite disappointed.
Very scary 1st half. The second half isn't scary at all, but overall it's worth a watch.
For the most part it's one man in an evil-as-sign-your-soul-over room - so it's more of a psychological horror than a lets-see-how-far-the-FCC(??notamericanso...please forgive me if that's wrong)-will-let-us-get-the-body-count-up-but-still-let-teenagers-see-it sort of movie (wow...the long titles Hollywood makes these days...!).
And for those geeks out there - the version that Quickflix sent me was the 'alternative'/directors ending. The original ending was based on American test screening. The ending you will see via Quickflix is the directors cut. Personally, from what I read of the original ending, I think we got the better deal.
Not too bad a movie with one main character and very few others. One of those far fetched horrors but watchable all the way through, bit of a twist adds to it.
I have to say I loved this movie. Of course, John Cusak is high on my list of favourite actors so that may sway my rating somewhat, but honestly, I was on the edge of my seat or hiding behind a cushion because of the tension. Even my blase, seen-everything-shocking, 27 year old son, who walked in about a quarter of the way through, sat down and watched, and was engrossed. Top ratings just for that!
This film is scary on many levels and it made me jump more than once. Quite sad at the end.
Very impressive. Has moments of sheer genius and edge-of-your seat terror.
quite a bizarre plot for a movie but wonderfully portrayed. this is definetely one hotel room i wouldn't want to be checking into anytime soon1
If you are looking for a chick flick, or anything with substance, this is not it. It wasn't overly bloody, but not me. Maybe others will enjoy it. This is so unlike what I normally watch, maybe I should have thought about my choice. John Cussack was very good, he works hard in this movie.
Can usually count on John Cusack to be in a good movie. He must really have needed the money to be persuaded to make this utter load of rubbish.
Films that really on nothing but one character in a room either work beautifully or drag on endlessly. This one sort of fell into the cracks for me in that to begin with it had me, and then it all just got a bit silly. Not terrible, but not great either.
A little confusing, but could be taken as a horror or fantastic portrayal of someone struggling with their sanity due to a tragic loss.
Apparently there are alternate endings to this movie and neither of them are very satisfying. Cusack's character seems to go from a non-believing sceptic to a fully-fledged "I see dead people" ghostbuster pretty quickly. He was too easily rattled for such a cynic.
This is a really good adaption of a Stephen King story, and actually a really good story, more of a pschological thriller than a horror movie. As noted with other reviews the tension builds all the way through it and then is a little let down at the end, Highly recommend watching this one.
Not too bad I spose, good actors. Ending could have been better.
Scary in places but became a bit OTT and lost me by the end. I had expected more as I'm a huge Stephen King fan and also John Cusack fan.
the movie is just plain stupid you find yourself wondering what on earth is going on as the movie changes so rapidly one moment he has a bathroom leaking blood out of the sink and the next its a completly different bathroom with an old man in a wheel chair wishing to die and then u find out that he bumped his head surfing and everything is normal and it was just a dream and then hes back in the room and its demolished and then its brand new again! shesh why dont they just make up there mind
Really enjoyed this movie. Am not a big Stephen King fan but Jackson and Cusack have a pretty good chemistry that makes the story come alive.
This movie definitely leaves you thinking what is really real but it was a little too confusing for my liking.
Cusack just isn't good enough to pull off a movie single-handed. It went from midly scary to "please let him die or get out of the room just as long as it's OVER" long before the end. I was not engaged and picked up a book about 30 minutes in. When will people get that Shawshank was a fluke and not every stephen king short story is worth making a feature-length movie out of?
Fantastic!. Horror movies have been very average so far - even those made from Mr King's short stories - this one was great. Slow going at first - but sucks you in. The lines were great- could hear some classic King lines in the dialog. Scary scenes v. good - had me checking under chair. Highly recommended.
Had me on the edge of my seat, best scary movie I have seen in a long time.
Special effects were awsome. Recommend this as a must see movie.
Pretty scarey, a little shocking but pretty clever. Worth a watch.
Awesome movie about time they bring out a great thriller movie. Ending could have been a bit better but other than that it was great!
Whew!!..what a ride..the suspense is killing and Cusak does a fine job here..I like the scene where he asks his girlfriend where are the cops and she says the're in
room 1408 where is he?...believable as a nightmare..Stephen King can still write 'em..9/10
definately the scariest movie I have seen in a long time.
I really enjoyed this movie but found the last quater confusing . He is in the room then out then back in ! Give it a go it's a good ride as one of the other reviewers commented.
One of the better King adaptions. Some creepy moments which alot of his movies lack. You need to watch it all though so be prepared to sit and concentrate. Better than i expected.
This film had the potential to be a great horror movie but unfortunately misses the mark. Although I'm a John Cusack fan, his portrail of the main character at times bordered on the farcical and the film ended up to be weak and a bit confusing. The film could not draw me into the real horror of the situation.
Can't say I enjoyed this movie very much. Only slightly scary and only slightly entertaining.
Interesting story - an unusual twist and keeps you guessing. Well put together and while some things stretch credibility it gets around them quite well. Worth watching if you like ghost/horror type stories
Great thriller by Stephen King. Enjoyed the strange twist at the end. Some genuinely scary moments delivered by John Cusack.
Good King horror. This is one of his better ones in fact. Good twist at the end.
A good movie. The ending could have been better, but still entertaining.
A great watch, with lots to twists. Under rated at 3 starts with an unexpected ending. For John Cuzack fans "a must see"!
Good movie, but not one of the best adaptions of a Stephen King book I've seen. John Cusack puts in a really credible performance which carries the movie, considering he's the only person you see for most of the movie.
Started strong, finished poorly. Flicks like these should have warnings on them like "don't bother".
Scared the bejesus out of me, and I watched it in broad daylight! (ok, there was a thunderstorm happening too). great performance my Cusak, who I had previously thought of as a bit of a twit. Great remake of a Stephen King tale, and excellant performance by Jackson!
Worthwhile but not brilliant
Well, had high hopes but no. A main character not good enough, or bad enough to care about. Stopped with 15min to go, just couldn't be bothered.
Typical Hollowood trash, lots of effects, no interest.
If you like a creepy film, but hate the gore and violence that are typical of scary films at the moment, this isn't bad. And John Cusack is always good.
Good movie worth watching but did seem to drag on a little towards the end, not a real scary movie but you will find yourself a bit jumpy at times.
ok movie but i wouldn't watch it again.
Loved it. A damn good scare. The best scary movie I have seen for ages. Not at all disappointng. Watch it alone, late at night to guarantee a sleepless night. Excellent!
Don't watch this one alone it the dark. John Cusack at his best.
Loved it !! Samuel L Jackson never disappoints and John Cusak was great in this role also.
This movie is brilliant. Well worth the watch.
1408 was an excellent film, one of the best supernatural thrillers I have ever seen..
Very disappointing, especially if you've read the story. Lost me half way through & from then on I clock watched & begged for the end to come soon........
Worth watching but not overly scary, the book would probably be better.
This movie was ok. I was hoping it would be really scary, but like all SK movies I have watched they have a great buildup and then fizzle.
terrible - boring and pointless... totally unbelievable and less than terrifying.
Some genuinely scary moments and some unexpected one's as well. It has an unexpected ending, but like all these sorts of films, it could have ended 10 different ways. Definately worth watching and as expected, Cusack carries the film well.
Worth Watching - Exciting at the beginning, but drag quite a bit at the end.
The scary movie is not a genre I usually go for but I really enjoyed this one. It's really quite amazing that it worked. It's basically one character in one room. That one character though, is in good hands with John Cusack, who pulls off another captivating performance that has you glued to the screen from beginning to end. The last quarter of the film gets a little shakey but all in all, this one's well worth the ride.
I'm a big King fan and this movie is one of his better movies but in saying that I was expecting better than what I saw, just left me feeling confused and just didn't suck me into the movie.
This is much better than the average Stephen King movie adaptation. Far less reliant on slash and gore than others in this genre, 1408 is a far more satisfying horror film that has some genuinely scary moments. John Cusack carries the film as he is alone on screen for much of the film's duration and his reactions to events are what makes this movie work. Maybe the ending could have been more satisfying, but overall it is one hell of a ride and I recommend it highly.
