Medium level violence, Low level coarse language

Director: Terry Gilliam
Actors: Bruce Willis, Christopher Plummer, Brad Pitt, Madeleine Stowe

A lone time traveler from the year 2035 must solve a riddle that may save his people... but it may also take him to the brink of madness. Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe and Brad Pitt star in this brilliant sci-fi masterpiece from Terry Gilliam, the acclaimed director of The Fisher King. After the world's population is devastated by a killer virus, survivors must live in dank underground communities. Cole (Willis) "volunteers" to travel into the past to obtain a pure virus sample, thereby helping scientists develop a cure. Along the way, he crosses paths with a beautiful psychiatrist (Stowe) and a one-card-short-of-a-full-deck mental patient (Pitt). But the race is on, as Cole searches for The Army of the 12 Monkeys, a radical group linked to the deadly disease. With unforgettable performances and imaginative special effects, 12 Monkeys is a modern-day classic laced with Gilliam's trademark wit and dazzling visual style.

This turned out to be an above-average sci-fi story with an emphasis on a tight script rather than special effects. Brad Pitt is good although a bit over-the-top - still, it IS a Terry Gilliam movie. At first, it appears a bit rambling and confused, but pay attention, and the bits will come together like a jigsaw puzzle. Would probably be even better on second viewing. Similar to Looper (also with Willis) which it pre-dates by almost 20 years.

The setup of this movie is promising: man returns from the future to get a sample of a virus. However, it just doesn't deliver. It's too rambling and disconnected with plot holes opening up the more you think about it. The plot seemed to be going nowhere but it became interesting only in the last 20 minutes, so stick with it. The apocalyptic and future sets were excellent as was the acting, but it's not a riveting film.

It took me twice watching this movie to work out what was going on. From a movie I didn't like to a masterpiece in just one viewing. Sad ending, but you can't change the past.

A man comes from the future with a warning about a disease which is about to destroy civilization as we know it. Great set up. So why is the movie so BORING? And it is boring. It's just lots of useless running around to create the illusion of something happening and talking, talking and more talking - often about things we already know. Everyone does good work here except Terry Gilliam who plainly can't tell a story and the writers who couldn't give this idea a centre. Even Gilliam's usual visual flair seems to have desserted him - "Brazil" this ain't.

Somtimes the writers just leave to much unanswered at the end. It's a shame because the scenes of the underground earth of the future were good and the story generally was great, slowly coming together like a jigsaw puzzle. Willis and Stowe are terrific. Could have been so much more with a clue of what happens next. Probably one to watch many times to really enjoy.

I'd love to see La Jetee, the film this is based on. Wonderful flick, especially the first two thirds or so. Brad Pitt showed he can act. As ever, Gilliam's visual feasting is ravenous.

When the first scene is the end you know that you have a film where it is all about how the story is told rather than what happens, and there is no-one who can spin a visual yarn like Terry Gilliam.

A very unusual film. One that can be confusing to some up until the end. I loved it and have seen it many times. It's good, a great plot and I love end of the world thrillers. There is lots of time travel and intrigue. Brad Pitt is wonderful and very believable in his role, it's the best character he has ever played in my opinion. Has a cool soundtrack and some truly heart pounding parts. If you like thrillers that are part science fiction, rent this now.

I enjoyed this movie on several levels - it was a good mystery Science Fiction flick as well as a good plot and great acting from some excellent performers. Terry Gilliam seems to get the best out of the cast.

One of Gilliam's best - a good follow on for any of you Brazil fans. Bruce Willis plays one of his better roles - a grunting toughster with a good mind and a cagey approach to his imprisonment and to his mission. Brad Pitt's character is delightful - where he plays a radical animal liberationist and nutcase - no really - a fruitcake kind of nutcase. Very entertaining. And there are some fun reality pradox conundrums for you to mull as the movie leaves you wondering...and yet fairly exhilarated. A few holes and "not believables" but overall a great filck.
