127 Hours is the true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston's (James Franco) remarkable adventure to save himself after a fallen boulder crashes on his arm and traps him in an isolated canyon in Utah. Over the next five days Ralston examines his life and survives the elements to finally discover he has the courage and the wherewithal to extricate himself by any means necessary, scale a 65 foot wall and hike over eight miles before he is finally rescued. Throughout his journey, Ralston recalls friends, lovers (Clémence Poésy), family, and the two hikers (Amber Tamblyn and Kate Mara) he met before his accident. Will they be the last two people he ever had the chance to meet? A visceral thrilling story that will take an audience on a never before experienced journey and prove what we can do when we choose life.

The brave and the boulder

Why do people climb a mountain “just because it’s there”? I find that reasoning to be wildly unsatisfying, and it has led me to judge adrenaline junkies and extreme sportsmen and women as flighty and undeserving of our adulation. I’m a film critic – I need motive. In 2003, self-proclaimed lone wolf and mountain climber Aron Ralston decided to go canyoning in Utah without telling a soul. He accidentally slipped into a lonely crack in the Earth, and found his arm pinned by a giant boulder. If he was an unstoppable force, he had just met his immovable object. Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours documents the time between Ralston finding himself in this unenviable situation and ultimately freeing himself (in an even less enviable way). I applaud the film because it doesn’t make out Ralston to be one of those “just because it’s there” dudes (although he perhaps may have thought of himself as such beforehand). As he learns about himself in this 127 hour period of isolation, his motives have little to do with the canyons and the mountains “being there” as much as his need to be gone; to be away from the world; to be alone. The arc of this film is not of a man getting trapped and finally getting free. It’s of a man who has been isolated from the world for far more than 127 hours, and finally calling out for ‘help’.

James Franco stars as Ralston, and gives the performance of a lifetime. The film is built around his performance; the film is his performance. He’s a frustratingly peppy figure at times; sympathetic, funny, cruel, stupid, smart and tender where appropriate. When he is first trapped, we know that he knows there is only one way out. The rest of the film shows him coming to terms with this decision, exploring every other option, as if he were a man going through the seven stages of grief. When he finally must do the unthinkable – and for those of you who want to avoid the spoilers of real life, perhaps look away now – he does it with steely determination and tragic resignation. Perhaps there is no other way to cut off your own arm.

I’m sure there are some who mock 127 Hours for being “the movie about the guy who cuts off his own arm” – I know, because I was one of them. And that is still true; this is indeed a movie about a guy who cuts off his own arm, and the scene in which it happens is as visceral, unpleasant and cathartic as cinema gets. But there can be more to a scene of self-amputation than Saw-esque gore. As we witness through Ralston’s fever dreams, hallucinations and the occasional speeches to his portable video camera, he is a man who ultimately decides he would rather surrender one of his limbs to see his family, friends and lovers again than die alone in the wilderness. The moment he decides to chop off his own arm is the moment he self-actualises this desire, and he becomes a character of truly admirable valour.

The film is full of Danny Boyle-isms; the over-exposed colour palette, the frenetic editing, the grandiose climactic moments of self-sacrifice and redemption. It’s Boyle at his most Boyle. Sometimes you have to come to terms with the fact that a filmmaker will tell the story in their own way. It’s up to us to decide whether their style is fitting for the tale they tell. Here – and this may be a rare instance for Boyle’s hi-NRG techniques – it works. As for the scene, well, we know it’s coming the moment the film begins, yet still it catches us by surprise. Boyle and co-writer Simon Beaufoy know that this is the one moment of the film that doesn’t need anything more than its own horrifying essence to be engrossing, and they wisely side-step any voiceover narration or stylistic techniques to add gravitas. And that is another less appreciated Boyle-ism; he does indeed like to play things big, but he also knows when to play things small. 127 Hours gets the balance just right.

4/5

Towards the end of the movie it kept stopping and then starting again which was quite annoying. It has been the only one to do it - there did not appear to be a problem with the CD when we took it out that we could find. The movie was good apart from that problem.

Rubbish. Seemed to go on forever and I ended up hating Aron. Can't forgive an 'experienced' hiker who makes SO MANY stupid decisions. Infuriating.

Very intense movie and well done for subject matter that could have been drawn out and potentially boring to watch. The final scenes are great and quite gruesome. One of the better survival stories made in quite a while. Worth watching.

movie was a bit slow... but hey what can you make of someone stuck for 4days on a rock? Lesson 1: ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS tell someone where you going.. - be specific Lesson 2: never be over confident with nature. (dont be cocky!) Lesson 3: have stuff with you for the just incase scenario.. - like water... electronic beacon (EPERB) etc. Anyhow, was worth watching .. once.

Stupidity at its best, guess that what Adrenaline junkies do best. Yeah when push comes to shove he even questions his own stupidity - like hello ? Tell someone where you’re going, especially when going ALONE. When all hope is lost to survive he does the only thing he can, Just points out what us humans will do for survival. Couldn't watch that bit though, eek me out.

This movie has me split in two. I didn't find it an enjoyable watching experience, it had me feeling uneasy right from the start, probably partly because I knew the story and what was going to unfold. But on the other hand it was a very well crafted film, will made, well acted, and gripping. I have always thought that Aaron Ralston was a few screws loose in only the way that the macho adventure type can be, and this film only served to confirm that.

Unless you've been buried under a rock (!), you would've heard of one hiker's uber brave commitment to live a few years ago. He got wedged between a rock and a, well, you know the rest and the only way to free himself, was to lose a limb using a blunt knife. And he did. Ouch doesn't even begin to describe it. A movie in the vein of Buried - one man, one set, for most of the film, 127 Hours is a highly watchable story. Actually my reference to the word 'vein' just then speaks volumes - 'cause this movie ain't for the squeamish. We're talking blood, millions of close-ups, exposed arteries, veins the whole shootin' match. How could this guy go to such eyewatering extremes??? Well, life's sweet, right? I can assure you, you'll want to jump on to Google and find out about this guy. He's an articulate, intelligent man; an inspiration of the highest order - and his skyhigh speaking fees reflect this.

A stupid guy, who makes a stupid mistake, who has to pay the price for his own idiocy. I mean, seriously?? Who in their right mind goes out in the bush and ACTS like that? And who goes out without telling anyone where they're going? I feel sorry for the guy who had to go through that, but he had it coming, and he's lucky he survived. Movie wise, fantastic filming. Story wise, no can do.

True story - long - but how can you shorten his 127 hours in that terrible situation. There is never going to be lots of other footage, its ALL about him. The moral of the story - "always tell people where you are & how long away for" - what an incredible man to survive & not give up. Once is enough, not a repeat watcher - but you will be pleased that you did!

A very well done film about the lengths one man will go to in order to survive. I think the fact that it is a true story is what makes it so gripping, knowing this actually happened, and trying to comprehend what would have been going through his mind. The visual imagery and camera angles that occur in some of the scenes was very clever, as was the use of music & sound, especially in the climactic scene which was very intense. James Franco's acting was brilliant, totally believable. Highly recommended if you like true stories and stories of survival, just don't show it to kids or young teens.

Movie was done very well in terms of screenplay and storyline. James Franco also did a great job as the main actor because initially I didn't think he would be any good. Certainly lived up to expectation, not good if you've got a weak stomach so don't have the kiddies around when you're watching it. Great take home messages for audience: always call your Mum back, never travel alone, always let somebody know where you're going and don't buy cheap survival equipment ;)

Being a lover of movies inspired by true stories, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. What mostly piqued my curiosity was the scene that was apparently gory enough to make people faint, vomit and leave the cinema. I personally did not find the scene all that bad but thought it was done well without being too OTT and gory. James Franco put in a stellar performance that portrayed the strength and determination that a human being has when faced with what could have been a life ending situation.

I knew of the story behind this movie before watching it. I think they did a good job with capturing how it mentally affected him whilst trapped. Definitely some parts where I had to close my eyes - I don't really like seeing blood or things being cut/stabbed. Amazing to watch the scenes after the movie ends where you see him hiking in the snow and swimming. At least he still does what he loves.

If you enjoy true story movies of adventure, misfortune and one's courage to survive, then this is a must see for you. What starts with a slow build leads to an extraordinary situation where a man has to make a decision betwee life and death, about mistakes of the past and the changes in his future if he makes it out alive. While not an action block buster like your Die Hards or Terminator flicks, the message behind this story is powerful enough to have you hooked to the very end, and hopefully also a little bit inspired.

Loved it. Another great Danny Boyle film. He is surely the perfect director for a movie that could have been a fairly standard film about a man battling against the forces of nature, because he injects such visual and aural energy that it carries you along for the ride. James Franco plays the part convincingly. Highly recommended.
