We enjoyed this series very much. It's not Shakespeare, but it's not Home and Away as some other reviewers reckon. I would prefer to watch this than to see the endless American cop shows and lawyer shows and doctor shows.

I totally concur with the comments below posted 31/8/12. I watched the first four episodes trying hard to support Aussie TV drama but it simply did not make it. The acting was amateurish, (including lead actor Brian Cox, he did not cut it a heavy villain) the script was disjointed in parts and sometimes painfully drawn out. We have been blessed watching the likes of HBO dramas, e.g. The Wire, Damages, Justified, Sopranos, Deadwood etc All top quality series in every way, The Straits simply cannot compare so you get disappointed watching it. The location is stunning and overall a good Aussie try but only a B grade effort.

Suspect that the producers were going for a tropical version of The Sopranos: What they got was 'Home and Away' with drugs and guns. With a duration of 550 minutes (10 episodes) across three disks; The Straits is a drawn out saga that could have ben adequately covered in less than half that time and, frankly, is not worth the effort. Stunning scenery aside, this was daytime soap opera calibre acting, script writing and direction. Shame; as this was clearly an expensive production with the potential to elevate Australian televison drama to the benchmark set by HBO and the BBC.
