A passionate, sensual and very modern version of Thomas Hardy's infamous novel, combining young, upcoming acting talent with recognisable and much-loved faces. This new 4 part series is intense, beautiful and tragic. When Tess's drunken father discovers their family can trace their ancestry back to Norman nobility, Tess’s unhappy story is set in motion. Young, beautiful and innocent, Tess Durbeyfield is driven to claim kinship with the wealthy D’Urbervilles and seek a portion of their family fortune but there she becomes the object of desire for the manipulative son of the family, Alec D’Urberville. Tess’s fate seems settled but a very different man, Angel Clare, seems to offer her love and salvation but how would he view the secrets of her past? As their relationship blossoms, Tess must choose whether to open her heart or remain silent..

Beautifully filmed and great acting. Certainly portrayed the harsh realities of rural life in that era. Pleased to see this in only 4 episodes...found the fuss about Tess rather melodramatic...were there no other suitable women around? Can't say too much without giving the plot away. If you like this genre, you'll like this re-telling. I adore Eddie Redmayne in this role - I wouldn't have jeopardised my happiness with him, that's for sure.
