I don't usually write reviews, but this is groundbreaking television. This is the first time I know of that Americans have ousted the British as the best tv dramatizers of a novel. While the British have Great Houses, Tod Haynes manages to make LA bungalows of the 30s look sumptuous. Yes, this is slow, but so was Brideshead. But Brideshead didn't have such inspired direction. This has an amazing intimacy, and toward the end I realized that, in a way I can't describe, Haynes makes those bungalows look like a Vermeer painting--detailed, intimate, with depth. And Winslett is terrific. Do not expect anything like the 40s film from the same novel. This is very much part of the current renaissance of American tv. and film. If you liked Far from Heaven, then you will like this, even though it is quite a different manifestation of Haynes's genius.
Absolutely fantastic. Loving every minute of it in every way and cant' wait for the second disc. Yes perhaps a bit slow but great acting, costumes and story line. Love it love it.
Kate Winslet is my favourite, and this is now on my wishlist to buy and keep. The sets, costumes and characters are well researched and presented. Guy Pierce is a stand out, as is Even Rachel Wood, and of course, Kate Winslet.
An amazing story, and well worth watching. If you do not enjoy period drama, don't rent this out. If you do - you will enjoy.
Good story but Mildred's charracter is sometimes annoying. Costumes, sets and cars are good. Some scenes are for adults only
I wanted to slap both mother and daughter it was painful to watch but I had to watch till the end hoping it would improve
Sit down, relax and turn your pulse down. This, at first, seems very slow but it is actually a slow reveal. The pace turns up a few notches when Guy Pearce appears half way through episode 2. Despite daughter Veta getting her comeuppance in episode 3, she remains a nasty piece of work.
The original Mildred Pierce was a classic. This remake is terrible. The characters are trite and not believable and the story doesn't have nearly the same impact as the original. This version was very disappointing and getting through both DVDs was a challenge.
Agrees with Suzie: slow. Agrees with Shep: Mildred is not a likeable character and very annoying at times. The daughter Veda angers me greatly. Sets and costumes are great. It's well made. But it's not a pleasurable viewing experience. So I gives it 2 1/2 stars.
I guess i'm in the minority, if not on my own, of saying - um yeah, whatever..... The supporting characters kept me watching. Mildred.... I did not 'get' her at all. She annoyed the hell out of me. And I most certainly did not believe her at the end.
Both CD have great acting, costums ....Bravo!
Interesting series - albeit a little slow in bits.
Hook line and sintered by this marvellous tele adaptation of the book. This was absolutely brilliantly acted, Kate Winslet is absolutely amazing as Mildred, a woman who inspires. Split over 2 DVDs, can't wait to get the second one now to find out the ending!!
Just fascinating, as always, to watch the great Kate Winslet in action. The property deals and legal jibber re the building business needed a bit more time. Some of the supports mumbled a bit. I got a bit lost. But the family drama is terrific and the era is beautifully evoked. Fabulous music score. The child playing Veda is chilling. I can't wait for Evan Rachel Wood to take over in the 2nd half..which I can't wait to see.
Enjoyed this movie very much which was in 5 parts over 2 DVD's. Great acting by Kate Winslett who fitted the role so well. Good story.
