Hell on Wheels tells the epic story of post-Civil War America, focusing on a Confederate soldier who sets out to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who have killed his wife. His journey takes him west to Hell on Wheels, a dangerous, lawless melting pot of a town that travels with and services the construction of the first transcontinental railroad - an engineering feat unprecedented for its time. The series documents the railroad's engineering and construction as well as institutionalised greed and corruption, the immigrant experience and the plight of newly emancipated African-Americans during Reconstruction. Hell on Wheels chronicles this potent turning point in North America's history and how uncivilised the business of civilisation can be.

I agree it's no Deadwood but it definitely gets better as it progresses. Worth the watch.

A bit slow and predictable in parts but still a good watch. Historically not accurate, just a reasonable fiction story.

It's good but it pales in comparison to other period shows such as Deadwood and Boardwalk Empire. Compared to those masterpieces this lacks bite. Compared to all the other ordinary shows on TV though this is one that should be more popular. I just wish the characters were more memorable.

This is a good movie I liked the way it unfolded and how lives were lost and touched by the plot of one man to build a railroad.

3 If you love the American post civil war era like I do you will enjoy this series. (The wife didn't, stopped after the first scalping !) I found it a great study of human nature and the various stark, cruel pecking orders of society during the progress of the new America. Tough hard uncompromising life, full of greed, hostilities towards each other and above all a desire to succeed in life by everyone. Impressed with the very realistic and accurate costumes & camp settings regarding the true brutal life in the railroad "hell hole." Storyline is a basic one of revenge, characters slowly building, it has a few holes in the script but forgivable; after all it is a western! Not as good as Clint Eastwood's "unforgiven" but similar record of those harsh times. Hope Disc 2 is as good.
