Summers span decades. Winters can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun. It will stretch from the South where heat breeds plots, lusts and intrigues; to the vast and savage Eastern lands; all the way to the frozen North where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the Kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and Queens, Knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men... all will play 'The Game of Thrones'. The kingdom is in turmoil. Rival families spin webs of political and sexual intrigue to gain control. Murder, conspiracy, betrayal - anything goes in the battle to gain control of the Iron Throne. And in this game, you win or you die!

by Andrew Williams,

Now, this is a story all about how: Ned Stark (Sean Bean) is the Lord of Winterfell, husband to Catelyn (Michelle Fairley), and father to five Stark children. He's unexpectedly summoned by King Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) to become ‘Hand of the King’ in the capital city of Westeros, King’s Landing. That’s about ten per cent of what happens in the pilot. Happy days? Currently sitting atop the pop culture landscape, it’s easy to forget Game of Thrones was, at the time of its making, a considerable risk on the part of HBO. It held enough promise to become television’s Lord of the Rings; an expansive fantasy epic with mainstream crossover appeal. It might have also become television’s Eragon; a pale imitation appealing purely to the fans of the books and no one else. But from its very first ...

But from its very first scenes, it becomes clear Game of Thrones was far destined to be the former.

My favourite thing about Game of Thrones is how it takes almost every fantasy element we know and love - the honourable hero, the dastardly villain, the righteous quest, the beautiful princess, and the supernatural force – and turns them squarely on their head. If you’re the type to shy away from anything featuring swords, goblets, and dragons for fear of hoary cliché or well-worn trope, this is for you. While it may take a little while to get going (mostly due to the ridiculous amount of ground, both metaphorical and literal, that needs to be covered), everything great about Game of Thrones is right here in Season One.

The final frontier: A confident, beautifully made beginning to what would become a pop culture phenomenon and a terrific start to a terrific show.

Top three episodes: 9) Baelor. A truly shocking moment in television history and a wonderful exercise in tension-building makes it clear that this is not your grandfather’s fantasy series. 6) A Golden Crown. Some TV moments are grandiose, meaningful, hilarious, or poetic. Some are just badass, and sometimes that’s enough. This has one of those. 1) Winter is Coming. The pilot (which was extensively reshot and recast) is even better the second time around: economical, beautiful, and with a great cliff-hanger.

Worst episode: 3) Lord Snow. It’s a pattern for HBO shows that their third episode also be their worst. After the set-up and ramifications of the pilot, Lord Snow is tasked with introducing a whole bunch of new characters and storylines. It all pays off later in the series, but it means there’s a lot of heavy lifting to be done here.

Season MVP: Despite the show being very well cast and acted, Peter Dinklage is the clear standout. Come the end of Season One, his Tyrion Lannister - the drunken, disrespected brother of King Robert's wife Cersei (Lena Headey) - is the series’ most fully-formed and fascinating character, and that’s a combination of great writing and this actor’s superlative performance.

4.5/5

Lots of gaps in reality of course but entertaining no less. Copious amounts of simulated rooting and tit exposure to keep one on one's toes.

The acting is wooden and it always look like they are playing for time, and the scipt is written on the day they shoot, like a soap opera. Well I guess it is in a way, except it's set in another time and place.......OOOh Medieval. I was told to give it time and eventually you'll be hooked, but I'm onto chapter 5 and still waiting for something original and intelligent to emerge. Every time it looks really pathetic they bring out a bit of gore or sex, none of which I find convincing. Another thing I always find hilarious are the character names. It's as if the script writers get together in the pub each night and say " look guys I've got another 23 new ones to make up by tomorrow, I've got one, how about Gibberisha?.........who's shout?"

It may be set in a medieval fantasy world but the firm focus on family vs. family drama makes each supernatural encounter special. An excellent first season that just gets better as new characters reveal new facets of the Game of Thrones.

I have never really been one to join in with "cult followings" but this is so well wriitten and played. I am now a convert. It is well acted and well photgraphed. The characters are believeable and even thought it is a Fantasy genre it is highly politically chaged and unpredictable as the story plays out. I can't wait for the next seasons. A little too much sex to make it suitable for kiddies if you were thinking of parking them in front of a dvd while you go to the shops, but I'm sure the gratiutious blood guts and violence will make them forget about the boobs.

The best adaptation of print to small or large screen I have seen. HBO have very capably distilled George RR Martin's series A Song Of Ice And Fire that first hit the shelves in 1998. The story is an epic saga inspired by the Caesars of Rome and England's medieval Cousin's Wars so expect plenty of sex, violence, plotting & intrigue. The sheer scale of the tale means in some cases the characters & connections will take a little while to develop but it's worth your patience. If you haven't read the books ... DO take a look at the Bonus Features on Season One's Disc Four: The Complete Guide to Westeros - it has all the back-ground info & titbits you could ask for :-)

Having read all the available books and hearing how good this was from my sister I finally decided to get it out. It keeps to the books brilliantly and for those of you who already have favourites you are if for a shock the next season. Loved it and thoroughly recommend it but if you want a bit more indepth information on the characters suggest you read the books. Also for those who found the sex & violence a bit too much it is in keeping with the books and the violence is only going to get worse

This series is pretty fantastic. It has everything if you are into medieval times, sex, violence, treason etc. It sucks you in from the first scene and at the end of every disk leaves you wanting more. Highly recommend it.

Is season one only 2 episodes? Thats all I received and thought they were brilliant. The characters really develop and draw you in. Just don't understand if the 5 disc box set has been condensed into what appears to be te 2 episodes.

My husband and I have both been engrossed in this show. It is very intriguing so you have to listen well to the dialogue. The characters are real and the action is non stop. Excellent indeed and hurry up Season 2 (please).

I don't normally like sword and sorcery movies/shows and was not really interested in watching this at all but I am SO GLAD I did. This is such an excellent show - have seen both seasons 1 & 2 a few times - helps getting your head around all the story lines. EXCELLENT - oh and to all those complaining about the sex scenes, they are a necessary part of the story line...and not that sexy.

Love the series. Thank Goodness they move along a lot more than the books which are annoyingly slow after the first 2. Very true to the story. For those complaining about the sex and violence they are a big part of the story line in the books which are basically about Wars for the Throne.

Season 2 finished on 3rd June 2012 - so why is Disk 2 still not available/?? For that matter - why is it not available (any season) for streaming? I do not sit lonely by my mailbox wiating for DVD's to arrive. Nowonder people use torrent downloads - is not about getting stuff for free, IT IS all about availablity. Why can't produces and distributors in Hollywood see that they are their own worst enemies on this?????

Watched all three disks last night - fixed to the TV. Couldn't get the next disk in fast enough! I went to WIKI and saw all the awards this series won. The series took the most watched in the US. Actually the only query I thought was 'where were all the old, fat women? LOL My husband are mature adults and nudity and sex scenes that fit in the storyline do not offend us. I am going to rewatch it tonight - Not for the nudity and sex but for the amazing scenery, costuming and story. Also, I want to sort out the characters and their relationship within the storyline. WIKI helped with that.

Swords & sorcery fantasy is not my cup of tea, but I persisted for four episodes waiting for it to get good. I shouldn't have bothered. This typifies everything bad about the genre - ponderous script, one-dimensional characters and lots of extraneous background and details covering up (and slowing down) a very slim plot. The first ten minutes were chilling in both senses of the word, and Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister was very good and had the best lines. Overall, not terrible but probably only for fans.

It's disappointing that HBO doesn't seem to believe that an interesting plot and well developed characters can hold the viewer's attention and thus feels obligated to resort to the inclusion of plentiful gratuitous sex scenes. If you're in to soft porn you'll love it. If you're in to the Fire and Ice series I'd stick with the books.

This series has such amazing production - it's incredible the levels of production that TV series now have. I'd read a lot about this series and it has definitely got me absorbed in to it. The number of characters and intricate storylines is incredible, thankfully the extras on the DVD has explanatory notes! Can't wait for more as there's only 2 eps per disc.

Superb production, good enough to inspire me to read the books, of which I have churned through 4000 pages in less than 6 months and am still hankering for more (another two yet to be written). The production captures them beautifully, and the corners that were (necessarily) cut were either not critical or at least understandable. Worth getting the blu ray version if you can- a lot of the in episode menus and extra features do an excellent job of filling in additional character background and history

I have never been particularly interested in watching a TV series about kings, queens, princes and princesses, until I saw the first episode of this exceptionally good TV show. This is one of those shows that will keep you wanting for more at the end of each and every episode. And I am one of those people who waits for a season to finish airing on TV and get a DVD instead so I can watch all the episodes in one go. I am so hooked to this, bigtime!

Awesome, loved this show to death, it's like soprano's set in medi-evil times! Lies, deception, sex, violence, but all in a good way, you get a reall connection with the characters, and really care what happens to them. Be warned though, it is a mean show, and does not care who it kills off!

Amazing production values and superbly cast, especially the children. No wonder Peter Dinklage got an Emmy. Only 2 episodes on disc 1...arrgh....need the next disc pronto! I hadn't read the books and found the characters confusing. A quick glance at synopsis on Wikipedia set me straight. I gasped out loud at what happened to Bran.

Excellent cast, and the HBO series has been relatively faithful to the George Martin books. It was bad that some of the actual battles were cut probably from budget costs, but otherwise a very good first season.
