You have to approach Tropfest and its ilk with a keenness to be entertained, a sort of pre-emptive forgiveness for the bits of triteness and cliche, the drollery of matriculation media projects. Some of these short films manage to pull it off elegantly, others, without regard to the names attached to them, fail embarrassingly. But any body who considers himself a film fan needs to see what's happening at the raw edge, and you can always skip ahead.
