Wonderful series - great acting and wonderful atmospheres but I would also read the book before hand to get the full effect.
Read the book... much better.
Having read the book twice trying to understand the finer points of the story I can understand the difficulty making this film. There are long pauses which linger a bit too long. But the film is faithful to the book. The acting is superb but, to appreciate the story one needs to concentrate.
This series is beautifully shot and beautifully written, but I found myself frustrated with its presentation of disability and race. The series mentions the stolen generation, but the only black character in the story is an unnamed Aboriginal man who magically watches over the house and the family. The presentation of the disabled character is frustratingly stereotyped, and at the end he 'escapes' his disability through death. Basically, his intellectual disability functions only as a metaphor, instead of just being part of who he is. I've never read the original book, but I saw the theatre production of Cloudstreet some years ago and its depiction of race and disability were more nuanced.
I had trouble understanding the dialogue with this entire series, but thought it was faithful to the book.
can't wait to see the next disc.!! delightful Aussie characters, and storyline.
Loved it. Hadn't heard of it before, but being by Tim Winton I thought it had to be good, and it was! Looking forward to the next "instalment". Acting from everyone is brilliant.
Beautiful, touching and tender. It takes time to weave its story. Loved it!
great australian series and good acting
Cloudstreet is one of my favourite novels and happily i wasn't disappointed with the TV adaptation. Disc 4 not worth the rental unless you're interested in the usual DVD extras.
Great series, very well done Australian drama. Gritty and well acted.
Don't get disc 4 as it is a rip off by quickflix to get an extra rental as it contains no extra scenes just extra crap they stick on the end of a video.
The whole series is excellent!
my advice is to read the book which is wonderful. I found the televised version infinitely boring despite a great cast
Passable, nothing special. On the otherhand my partner who had read the book with it was based on, very much enjoyed it
very slow to begin the story. But once into it, it takes a life of it's own. I am sure the more I see the more I will enjoy. They had a hard life in those days!
Being a huge fan of the book, I couldnt wait to see this! I loved everything about this series.... The actors did a tremendous job of bringing these characters to life. The characters however flawed are endearing and believable. The landscape truly captures the beauty of Western Australia, and I was reminded of the gorgeousness of it. The story is amazing and heartfelt. Cleverly shot and my daughter and I were left gasping for more, so excited by the next disc to come!
My husband and I loved this series. A fascinating glimpse into life in Australia in the nineteen thirties and forties. The acting was very natural and the characters well drawn. Don't bother with Disk four. The story finishes at disk three.
Excellent production of Winton's great work. Full marks. Looking forward to remaining discs.
I loved Cloud Street, really enjoyed the first 3 discs. I was surprised to see a 4th arrive in the mail as the story went to an ending but I was happy to see a 4th episode wondering what would happen next.................
What a let down................BONUS FEATURES......................why would I want to see bonus features.
It was quite annoying, I got the place to myself, got comfortable on the couch and all I got was BONUS FEATURES !!!!!!
I felt I'd been duped.
Please don't send me any more bonus feature discs, I order movies and I'm not interested in the bonus features disc.
I found this a bit slow. Perhaps its about the slower pace of a past era vs the frantic pace in which we currently exist. Well photographed though and family tensions captured beautifully throughout.
Quirky as you'd expect from Tim Winton. Very enjoyable.
Excellent Australian production a well loved great Australian novel brought to life with great acting from all the performers, beautiful cinematography and a true depiction of life in Australia during the war years.
Just finished disc two. The series a great disappointment. Only the dramatic, salacious, grim and fantasy aspects of a delightful book are featured. Overall a harrowing tale with few if any of the happy times shown. I am sorry that Winton was associated in any way with this production, I think he was "conned" by the TV people as to what audiences want. The only good result for me is that I will re-read the book. The film really doesn't resemble it. Too many "time" errors also.
A bit puzzling to start with, but then it was absorbing.
