American Gothic - Season 1 (1995)

This is one of my favourite shows, but the DVD set had most of the episodes out of order, which really doesn't help (especially if you only get the discs one at a time). Since it has a strong, evolving story, the order really does matter. For the record, I think this is the right order: Disc 1: 1, 2, 3 Disc 2: 4 Disc 5: 4 Disc 2: 1, 2, 3 Disc 4: 3, 2 Disc 3: 1 Disc 6: 1 Disc 3: 2, 3, 4 Disc 4: 1, 4 Disc 6: 2, 3 Disc 5: 1, 2, 3

This was my all time favourite show as a teen. The phrase 'someone's at the door', when said almost in a whisper, still sends a little shiver down my spine. The acting from Gary Cole and Sarah Paulson stay true in my mind, more than 17 years later. I'll never understand why there was only one season, but I do love that it's been elevated to cult status. Needless to say, I still plan to name my first son Caleb because of this show!

A little outdated now but still intruiging enough to keep you watching! I'm curious to see how the story and characters evolve, not having seen this series back in its day.

I vaguely remember this on tv when I was a kid. The "someones at the door" phrase is a bit eeire and creepy as is the rest of the show. The sheriff has some kind of 'hold' over the town, like he is psychic or a witch or something. I'm not sure what purpose the dead sister/ghost serves. Little Caleb is intriguing. Its not as technologically advanced as some of the other ghost/supernatural shows on tv today, but its still interesting.

I remembered waching this as a kid and the series has always been at the back of my mind. It's always kind of annoyed me that the show has never made it back for a re-run on television. I added the entire series to my queue and the first DVD has not disappointed. Little Caleb is exactly as I remembered him - slightly eerie and wise beyond his years. The local sheriff, Gary Cole, is so evil and yet he seductively draws you into his web. As can be expected, the series has certainly aged (oh I mean I have) and for those looking for a fast actioned supernatural thriller, this series probably won't cut it for you. For me though, my revisiting of the series has been an excellent queue choice, and I am maddened that there are only 4 episodes on each disk!

To weird to follow

I originally saw this series on tv years ago.. it'sawesome.

This didn't do much for me. I found Gary Cole as tedious as I have always found him, wooden and never quite making it for me as an actor.

I remembered this show from my youth so I hired it out of curiousity. It was pleasing to see that my memory hadn't faded. Gary Cole is still a menaciing sherrif and the catch-cry of "there's someone at the door" remains just as freaky today as it did back then. This show lives up to its memory. I enjoyed revisiting it and was sucked into the supernatural drama just as much as I was back when it first aired on TV. It hasn't aged.

There is much to like about this series, not least its two lead characters, but as a series it falls down badly with a lack of continuity in the story line. Individual episodes are generally excellent, its just that they have nothing to do with each other and often ignore what has gone before.

I hadn't seen this series on TV so this wa my first viewing. Pretty good, probably much more groundbreaking back in it's time. It probably pales in comparison to some of today's TV series such as Lost, Heroes & Supernatural, but it's still worth a look.
