Director: Stanley Kubrick
Actors: Gary Lockwood, Keir Dullea

Stanley Kubrick’s dazzling, Academy Award-winning achievement (Special Visual Effects) is an allegorical puzzle on the evolution of man and a compelling drama of man vs. machine. Featuring a stunning meld of music and motion, the film was also Oscar® nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay. Kubrick (who co-wrote the screenplay with Arthur C. Clarke) first visits the prehistoric age-ancestry past, then leaps millennia (via one of the most mind-blowing jump cuts ever) into colonised space, and ultimately whisks astronaut Bowman (Keir Dullea) into uncharted space, perhaps even into immortality. DISC ONE CONTAINS: Feature film, Commentary by Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood.

I will admit, my respect and admiration for this film certainly exceeds my actual enjoyment of watching it, but regardless Kubrick's film is atmospheric and full of meaning that can be interpreted from person to person. There's no other film like it and I don't expect another film like it anytime soon.

I still remember seeing this on the big screen in 1969. And I still enjoy it as much today, having seen it, perhaps a hundred times since the first. This is not Star Wars. There are no ray guns or brain eating zombies. This is a story about humanity, evolution, and the subtle influence of on these things by a life form beyond our comprehension. It's about the struggle for life, both aeons ago, and in the future. It's about our quest for knowledge and answers. This is not a movie to entertain, this is a movie to make you think, to ponder, to imagine. There are no answers in this movie, no explanations, no resolutions. This is a journey you take into the surreal, from what is known, to beyond imagination itself. This is Sci-fi at it's best.

Terrible film. Didn't get this film and I can't believe people think this film is a classic. I love Stanley Kubrick's work but this film is a definite lowlight. Give this film a very wide berth.

Tragically this would never have been made today, so what does that tell you about the crap spewing out of Hollywood. This is still a classic.

Deliberately slow. This is more arthouse than adventure. The silence in space with only the breathing is realistic (similar in "Dark Star"). A Starwars soundtrack with quick scene changes would have spoiled it, as would the appearance of aliens wanting harm us. Maybe it's we who are more evil than the aliens! It's our own inventions (Hal) that do us in. Access to the internet explained the ending.

Although undoubtedly a great sci-fi classic I couldn't give it 5 stars due to the ambiguous and vague conclusion. I know the ending is intentional but even though it provokes much thought and discussion, it felt like I'd just watched the first half and there was more to come.

couldn't be bothered with it. Much too slow moving, so didn't continue to view.

A timeless classic even though much of the movie appears dated (if that makes sense).

A cinematic journey akin to getting a root canal or watching grass grow. Has been acclaimed by many as fantastic but I could barely watch this. Much like a very very long video clip for the only redeeming feature, the music.

Slowest and most boring movie I have ever watched in my life. It was MORE painful than pulling teeth, I fast forwarded through most of it.

I had enjoyed seeing this before but this time I found it slow and at times boring. The only action part was the confrontation with Hal.

when you consider when the film was made, it certainly lead the field. The music alone is enough reason to whatch the movie.Special effects great. Convoluted story in places, enjoyable.

If you are a sci-fi fan you'll like this movie. The book and the screen play were written at the same time, however I think that it is important that you read the book first to get a good understanding of what is going on during some of the scenes. There are some differences in the story line which is to be expected. Overall a movie worth watching!

It's hard to beleive this movie was made in the 60's. A brilliant, thought provoking journey through space and time.

A truly seminal epic. The juxtaposition of imagery and soundtrack is quite astonishing. The progressive paradigm of human evolution into a new realm presents a dichotomy with the broader universe. Ethereal and fascinating.
