Bobby, an Australian aborigine, has a real knack for picking winners down at the horse track. But he isn't able to enjoy the winnings, largely because he's been dead for a century or two. His mortal remains -- his head in a jar, which mysteriously turns to indicate his picks -- are in the care of a Dublin medical college. His friends there are very impressed with his luck, especially Brendan Delaney (Robbie Coltrane), a porter and semi-reformed gambling addict who's already burned through the college fund for his daughter, much to the chagrin of his wife (Brenda Blethyn).
